As a negative, it does not necessarily restrict a marfūʿ muḍāriʿ following it to future time.

In a case of this kind, مَا is often substituted for it in explaining a phrase, as with لَا يَعْرِفُ هِرَّا مِنْ بِرٍّ in art. بر; and the muḍāriʿ is better rendered by the present than by the future.

1.1There is not any man standingلَا رَجُلَ قَائِمٌ

But when the noun and the adjective are both simple words, and not separated, the adjective may be used in three different ways, as in لَا رَجُلَ ظَرِيفَ, ظَرِيفًا, and ظَرِيفٌ; otherwise it must be marfūʿ or manṣūb, but not mabnee.

Ibn-ʿAkeel: this relates to لا used لِنَفْىِ الجِنْسِ.

1.2lestلا

See رَكَبَهُ.

1.3There is nothing due to him, nor anything to be demanded of himلَا لَهُ وَلَا عَلَيْهِ

This is how I have rendered the phrase under مَلَسَى, in three places.

When لا is a general negative, the context makes it allowable to leave out its subject, as in لَا عَلَيْكَ for لَا بَأْسَ عَلَيْكَ; and sometimes the predicate, when it is known, is left out, as in لَا بَأْسَ.

1.4

لَاشَ for لَا شَىْءَ: see لوش.

1.5[as the time occupied in saying لَا وَلَا]كَلَا وَلَا

See an example under لوْذَان.

1.6olive-oilلَا وَلَا

In allusion to the words in the Qurʾān 24:35; it occurs in a tradition.

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
