1a meadowرَوْضَةٌ

A garden: so in the Greek language. Or a garden containing everything that is found in gardens — this is the proper meaning, and it is so with the people of every language — and containing grape-vines. Or a garden in which there are grape-vines; or a place in which there are grape-vines; or a wide, beautiful garden; or a garden containing grape-vines and palm-trees.

Or, with the Arabs, a valley abounding with herbage, like a garden; or a valley, or valleys, producing various sorts of plants or herbage.

In the K, for الأَوْدِيَةُ الَّتِى تُنْبِتُ we should read مِنَ الأَوْدِيَةِ الَّتِى تُنْبِتُ [or rather, مِنَ الأَوْدِيَةِ مَا يُنْبِتُ as in the Msb].

Seer.

And the greenness of grapes, or of herbs.

Masculine and feminine; sometimes feminine, as in the Kur 23:11, because by الفِرْدَوْسَ there is meant الجَنَّةَ.

According to Fr it is an Arabic word, occurring in a verse cited under ثَوَابٌ, which is by Hassán Ibn-Thábit, and derived from فَرْدَسَةٌ, meaning "width" or "amplitude"; so Fr says.

Or it is Greek, transferred into the Arabic language; [that is, arabicised: but as it occurs in the Kur (18:107 and 23:11), this is contrary to the opinion of Esh-Sháfi'ee and others, who deny that any arabicised word occurs in it: ] or it is Syriac.

The plural is فَرَادِيسُ, which the people of Syria apply to gardens and grape-vines.
