An adverbial noun, used to ask about a place: Where? in what place?
Zj says that it is an interrogative particle, like كَيْفَ.
[To what place? where to?]—إِلَى أَيْنَ
ISd says that it is a noun, because one says this.
It is always mansoob, unless the article is prefixed to it: الأَيْنُ, which means the place where.
Where, or in what place, is Zeyd?—أَيْنَ زَيْدٌ
[Where is your house, or tent?]—أَيْنَ بَيْتُكَ
Where will you be taken, and what will be done with you, if this is your intellect?—أَيْنَ يُذْهَبُ بِكَ
It is feminine, but may be made masculine.
Or, according to Mtr, this is a saying of the people of Baghdád, addressed to someone they charge with foolish judgment or opinion, meaning أَيْنَ يُذْهَبُ بِعَقْلِكَ: where is your intellect being taken?
What place does this hold in relation to that, or in comparison with that?—أَيْنَ هٰذَا مِنْ ذَاكَ
عَنْ ذَاكَ and وَ ذَاكَ likewise: what has this to do with that? what has this in common with that?

It also denotes a condition.
Here the sitting must be in one place.
[Wherever you stand, I will stand]—أَيْنَمَا تَقُمْ أَقُمْ
مَا is added to it, giving this.

It also occurs used as a proper name of a particular place.
The poet Homeyd Ibn-Thowr speaks of his companions in this way: wherever those places were, there my companions were.
In this case it is stripped of the meaning of an interrogative, and is imperfectly declinable because it is determinate and of the feminine gender.
In one copy the reading is بِأَنَّى وَ أَيْنَمَا, which may mean the same; and under أَىٌّ, بِأَىَّ وَ أَيْنَمَا.
