Nounيُسْرٌ4 senses · 3 main

Core sense — easiness, facility; easiness of circumstances, competence, wealthgenerated

1

[Easiness; facility;] the opposite of عُسْرٌ; also يُسُرٌ [and يُسْرَى (see sense 3, where it is explained in various ways)].

مَيْسُورٌ is the opposite of مَعْسُورٌ [and so means the same as above; or easy, facile]; or, according to the lexicologists, it means what is made easy, or facilitated; or, according to Sb and the M [but see مَعَقُولٌ], it is a maṣdar of the measure مَفْعُولٌ [used in the sense of يُسْرٌ as explained above], of the same kind as [its opposite] مَعْسُورٌ.

Abu-l-Hasan says that this is the truth, for it has no unaugmented verb, and maṣdars of this measure belong not to verbs which are in use, but only to imaginary unaugmented triliteral verbs, as with مَجْلُودٌ, which is [really] from تَجَلَّدَ.

For examples of يُسْرٌ see عُسْرٌ.

1.1grant me a delay until I am in a state of easiness of circumstancesأَنْظِرْنِى حَتَّى يَسَارِ

Also — according to the M; but in the K, "or"; and in both of these lexicons the meaning that follows is placed first — and likewise يُسُرٌ and يَسَارٌ and يَسَارَةٌ and مَيْسَرَةٌ and مَيْسُرَةٌ.

Sb says of this last that it is like مَسْرُبَةٌ and مَشْرُبَةٌ in not following the manner of the verb, [but that of the simple noun.]

And مَيْسِرَةٌ: easiness [of circumstances]; competence, or sufficiency; or richness, wealth, or opulence; abundance; [in these senses also the opposite of عُسْرٌ].

يُسْرَى means [the same; or] easy things, affairs, or circumstances; the opposite of عُسْرَى, as also مَيْسَرَةٌ.

In this the last word is indeclinable, ending with kesr, because it is altered from the maṣdar, which is المَيْسَرَةُ.

then let there be a postponement until he is in a state of easiness of circumstancesفَنَظِرَةٌ إِلَى مَيْسُرِهِ

Some read this in the Qur'ān 2. 280; but Akh says that this is not allowable, for there is no noun of the measure مَفْعُلٌ [of this kind]. As to مَكْرُمٌ and مَعُونٌ, [it is said that] they are plurals [virtually, though not in the language of the grammarians] of مَكْرُمَةٌ and مَعُونَةٌ. [On this point, see مَأْلُكٌ under أَلُوكٌ.]

Core sense — a game of hazard played with arrows for portions of a slaughtered camelgenerated

1the first arrow, having [one notch and] one portion of the slaughtered camelالفَذُّ
the second, having [two notches and] two portionsالتَّوْءَمُ
the third, having [three notches and] three portionsالرَّقِيبُ

the fifth, having [five notches and] five portionsالنَّافِسُ
the sixth, having [six notches and] six portionsالمُسْبِلُ
the seventh, the highest of them, having [seven notches and] seven portionsالمُعَلَّى
the eighth, having no portionالسَّفِيحُ
the ninth, having no portionالمَنِيحُ
the tenth, having no portionالوَغْدُ

The game, or play, with unfeathered and headless arrows; the game of hazard which the Arabs play with such arrows; a game of the Arabs, played [by ten men,] with ten unfeathered and headless arrows.

They first slaughtered a camel, [bought on credit, (see below, in this paragraph,)] and divided it into ten portions, or, as some say, into twenty-eight.

Or, as some say, this one was the fourth.

[The players to whom these three fell had to pay for the slaughtered camel: from which it appears that if the camel was divided into ten portions, the game must have continued after all these were won, until it was seen whose were the eighth and ninth and tenth arrows; and it seems to be the general opinion that this was the case.]

The camel being slaughtered, they collected the ten arrows and put them into the رِبَابَة, a thing resembling a quiver, and turned them round about, or shuffled them: [or they employed a person, whom they called حُرْضَة, to do this:] then they put them into the hand of the judge, who took them out one after another in the name of one after another of the party; [or they commissioned the حُرْضَه to do so;] and each took of the portions of the slaughtered camel according to his arrow; but those to whose lots fell the arrows without portions had to pay the price of the slaughtered camel.

With the flesh of it they afterwards fed the poor; and anyone who would not join them in the game they reproached, and called a بَرَم (Sefeenet Er-Rāghib, printed at Boolák, p. 637). [See also رَقِيبٌ and ضَرِيبٌ and عَشْرٌ.]

Or any game of hazard; or play for stakes, or wagers — so that even the game of children with walnuts is included under this name by Mujáhid in his explanation of verse 216 of chapter 2 of the Qur'ān: or anything in which there is risk, or hazard.

Or the game of tricktrack, backgammon, or tables; synonymous with نَرْدٌ. And chess was called by 'Alee the مَيْسِر of the Persians, or foreigners.

Or the slaughtered camel for which they played: for when they wanted to play, they bought a camel on credit for slaughter, and slaughtered it, and divided it into twenty-eight portions, or ten portions; and when one [of the arrows] after another came out [from the رِبَابَة] in the name of one man after another, the gain of him for whom came out those to which portions belonged appeared, and the fine of him for whom came out [any of the arrows called] the غُفْل; so called as though it were a place of division: and so used by the poet Lebeed, who speaks of a fat مَيْسِر.
