maṣdarإِيلَاجٌ
Core sense — he, or it, caused to enter; he introduced, or inserted, itgenerated
4.1he, or it, caused to enter; he introduced, or inserted, it—إِيلَاجٌ
The maṣdar is also given as إِتَّلَجَ (so in the CK and in several manuscript copies of the K), or as أَتْلَجَ (as in the L, in all the copies of the K consulted by SM in this article, and in art. تلج), in which ت is substituted for و; this last is the correct reading.
4.1.1He makes the night enter into the day, and the day enter into the night—يُولِجُ ٱللَّيلَ فِى النَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِى ٱللَّيْلِ
In the Qur'ān 22:60 and other chapters. The night is made, by being increased, to enter into and encroach upon the day, and the day in the same way upon the night.
Or: He increases the night with a part of the day, taking from the day and adding to the night, and in the same way increases the day with a part of the night.
4.1.2
[اولج is often used for اولج ذكره, and hence of sexual intercourse.]
