muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarوَقْفٌ وُقُوفٌ

Core sense — he stood still, he paused; he understood it; he made him know itgenerated

He was, or became, still, or stationary; [he stood still;] he continued standing; and [simply] he stood.

The opposite of جَلَسَ.

1.1.1he made the beast stand still, or become motionlessوَقَفَ الدَّابَّةَ

وَلَوْ تَرَىٰٓ إِذْ وُقِفُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰلَيْتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلَا نُكَذِّبَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

If thou couldst but see when they are confronted with the Fire! They will say: "Would that we were but sent back! Then would we not reject the signs of our Lord, but would be amongst those who believe!"

6:30
وَلَوْ تَرَىٰٓ إِذْ وُقِفُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ ۚ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ هَـٰذَا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّنَا ۚ قَالَ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ

If thou couldst but see when they are confronted with their Lord! He will say: "Is not this the truth?" They will say: "Yea, by our Lord!" He will say: "Taste ye then the penalty, because ye rejected Faith."

37:24
وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْـُٔولُونَ

(TA.) وَقَفَ الدَّابَّةَ , inf. n. وَقْفٌ , He made the beast to be, or become, still, or motionless. (Msb.) وَقَفَ عَلَيْهِ He stopped, or paused, upon coming to him, or it; he stopped, or paused, at it; or where he, or it, was. وَقَفَ عَلَى شَىْءٍ He paused at, and paid attention to, a thing. وَقَفَ عَلَيْهِ He comprehended it, namely, a meaning: he understood it. (TA. [Or, correctly, وُقِفَ , for it is there altered.]) He met with it; namely, a word or the like, in reading: often occurring in this sense. وُقِفَ عَلَيْهِ He saw it: and he was introduced into it, and knew what was in it. (TA.) He was made to know it surely. See Bd, vi. 27 and 30. وَقَفْتُهُ على ذَنْبِهِ I made him acquainted with, or made him to know, his crime, sin, fault, or the like; (S, K:) and so أَوْقَفَهُ عَلَيْهِ , q. v. (Mgh.) وَقَفَ , aor. وَقِفَ , inf. n. وُقُوفٌ , He withstood, resisted: governing by عَنْ . وَقَفَهُ and أَوْقَفَهُ and وَقَّفَهُ [He bequeathed it, or gave it, unalienably:] the first of these is the most chaste: the last is disapproved and rare. In the sense of عَرَّفَهُ إِيَّاهُ; and although it occurs often, وَقَفَهُ عَلَيْهِ seems to be post-classical.

[God taught, or revealed to, Adam what He pleased to teach him]وَقَّفَ ٱللّٰهُ آدَمَ عَلَى مَا شَآءَ أَنْ يُعَلِّمَهُ إِيَّاهُ

It is used in this sense, or as meaning that He (God) revealed the thing to him, in many places in the Mz, 1st نوع; as, for example, in the following instance, cited from IF.

(Accord. to some copies of the K, تَثَبَّتَ .] You say, تَوَقَّفْتُ عَلَى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ I paused, or waited, at this thing, or affair. (TA.) And تَوَقَّفَ عَلَى جَوَابِ كَلَامِهِ [He paused, or waited, at the reply to his speech]. (TA.) And hence, تَوَقَّفَ عَلَى السَّمَاعِ He limited, or restricted, himself to what had been heard [from the Arabs, with respect to a construction, &c.]; did not transgress it, or overstep it.
