Form 1وَعَظَهُ1 sense
maṣdarوَعْظٌmuḍāriʿيَعِظُ

Core sense — he exhorted him, admonished him, or warned himgenerated

1.1I only exhort you, or command you, to do one thingإِنَّمَا أَعِظكُمْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ

maṣdar وَعْظٌ and عِظَةٌ, in which the ة stands in place of the omitted و, and عَظَةٌ and مَوْعِظَةٌ, in which the ة is not there to mark the feminine gender, because the gender is not real; or this last is a simple substantive.

[He was exhorted, admonished, or warned, by the example of another]وُعِظَ بِغَيْرِهِ

[He preached a sermon, or sermons]وعَظَ

on this sense He exhorted him, admonished him, or warned him; he put him in fear. He exhorted him to obedience, and commanded him to obey. He gave him good advice, and reminded him of the results of affairs. He reminded him by telling him what should make the heart tender, mentioning reward and punishment.

They said: "It is the same to us whether thou admonish us or be not among (our) admonishers!

(K.) It is said in the Kur, [xxxiv. 45,] إِنَّمَا أَعِظكُمْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ I only exhort you, or command you, to do one thing. (Msb.) 8.1[The happy man is he who is exhorted by the example of another, and the unhappy is he by whose example another becomes exhorted]السَّعِيدُ مَنْ وُعِظَ يِغَيْرِهِ وَالشَّقِىُّ مَنْ ٱتَّعَظَ بِهِ غَيْرُهُ

It is said in this form.

He became exhorted, admonished, warned, or put in fear. He obeyed, or conformed to, a command, or an exhortation to obedience, and restrained himself. He accepted good advice, and the reminder of the results of affairs. He became reminded of what should soften his heart, by the mention of reward and punishment.

As a simple substantive its plural is عِظَاتٌ, and it is synonymous with مَوْعِظَةٌ, the plural of which is مَوَاعِظُ.

[But he to whom an exhortation, or an admonition, or warning, comes from his Lord]فَمَنْ جَآءَهُ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِ
