In the S the synonym is written ثِقْل in two copies, and apparently so also according to A ʿObeyd, who makes its plural أَثْقَال; in my copy of the Msb it is written without vowel signs; in the K it is written ثِقَل.

Plural أَوْزَارٌ.

Core sense — one who bears a burden with another; a vicegerent of a kinggenerated

1one who bears a burden or burdens with another; or one who aids, helps and strengthens anotherمُوَازِرٌ

See Form 3.

In the same way أَكِيلٌ has the sense of مُؤَاكِلٌ, and جَلِيسٌ that of مُجَالِسٌ.

1.1figurative · مجازthe one who bears with the king the burdens of the regal officeوزير

[A vicegerent of a king or the like; or a confidential minister of state: in English commonly written vizier, in imitation of the Turkish pronunciation, but properly wezeer.] He is the king's close companion, who bears his master's burden and aids him by his counsel.

That is, يُوَازِرُهُ, meaning يُحَامِلُهُ.

Not from مُوَازَرَةٌ, meaning the act of aiding or the like, because the و in that word is substituted for ء, and the derivative from it of the measure فَعِيلٌ is أَزِيرٌ.

ISd says that some hold the و in وزير to be substituted for ء; but Abu-l-ʿAbbás says this does not agree with analogy, for the substitution of ء for و in a word of this measure is rare, and that of و for ء is stranger still.

The وزير is so called because he bears for the king the burden of administration; or the word is from وَزَرٌ, meaning a mountain to which one has recourse to save himself from destruction. Aboo-Is-hák: the وزير of the khaleefeh is one on whose counsel the khaleefeh relies in his affairs, and to whom he goes for refuge or safety.

Plural وُزَرَآءُ and أَوْزَارٌ, the latter like أَشْرَافٌ and أَيْتَامٌ, plurals of شَرِيفٌ and يَتِيمٌ.
