maṣdarوُدٌّmuḍāriʿيَوَدُّ
Core sense — he loved him, or it; I wished that it were sogenerated
1.1I loved him, or it, i.e. any means of attaining or doing good—وَدِدْتُ
This is the first person, and also وَدَدْتُ, though most disallow this..
Maṣdar وُدٌّ and وِدٌّ and وَدٌّ, of which three forms the first is the most common; and مَوَدَّةٌ, or this last is a simple substantive; and مِوَدَّةٌ (CK and some MS. copies of the K) and مَوِدَّةٌ (according to some other copies of the K, this and the one before it departing from the common forms of maṣdars) and مَوْدِدَةٌ (M, Kz) and مَوْدَدَةٌ, but these last two are allowable only in poetry, and depart from constant rule, the former doubly (Kz); and وِدَادٌ and وَدَادٌ and وُدَادٌ, of which last three forms the first is the most common; and وَدَادَةٌ; and, according to some, وِدَادَةٌ and وُدَادَةٌ; and, as in a copy of the K held to be of good authority, مَوْدُودَةٌ.
The form وَدَدْتُ is disallowed by the Basrees, who hold it to be erroneous. Zj says: we know that Ks did not mention وَدَدْتُ without having heard it, but he heard it from one who was no authority.
1.1.1love it, or affect it—أَوْدِدْهُ
An imperative form of أَوَدَّهُ, without idghām, according to the dialect of El-Hijáz; it occurs in a tradition.
1.1.2I wished that you would do that—وَدِدْتُ لَوْ تَفْعَلُ ذٰلِكَ
I wished that you would do that—وَدَدْتُ لَوْ أَنَّكَ تَفْعَلُ ذٰلِكَ
Muḍāriʿ as above; maṣdar وُدٌّ and وَدٌّ and وَدَادَةٌ and وَدَادٌ, or وِدَادٌ (T, in TT).
1.1.3I wished that it had been so—وَدِدْتُ لَوْ كَانَ كَذَا
1.1.4I wished for the thing—وَدِدْتُ الشَّىْءَ
Fr says that this is the more approved form, but some say وَدَدْتُ; in both cases the muḍāriʿ is يَوَدَّ only. [On the latter form of the past tense, see above.]
This is a secondary meaning of the verb.
