Core sense — one; the first of the numbers; one unequalledgenerated
1[We met, each of us being one alone]—إِلْتَقَيْنَا وَاحِدَيْنِ
One; the first of the numbers; synonymous [in many cases, which are shown below] with أَحَدٌ [and one alone: a single person or thing]. Feminine وَاحِدَةٌ.
It sometimes takes the dual form, as in a verse cited from a poet by IAar.
Or the dual form belongs to it in another sense, explained below, namely “alone”.
Plural وَاحِدُونَ, وُحْدَانٌ, and أُحْدَانٌ; in the last, أ is substituted for و because of the ḍammeh.
you are one tribe—أَنْتُمْ حَىٌّ وَاحِدٌ
Also حَىٌّ وَاحِدُونَ, as one says شِرْذِمَةٌ قَلِيلُونَ.
آحَادٌ may also be a plural of وَاحِدٌ [and so originally أَوْحَادٌ], as أَشْهَادٌ is the plural of شَاهِدٌ.
[one ten]—عَشَرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ
[one hundred]—مِائَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ
Er-Rāghib: its proper meaning is a thing having no subdivision; it is then applied to anything existing, so that there is no number to which it may not be applied as an adjective.
It is interchangeable with أَحَدٌ when used as an adjective applied to God, and in certain nouns of number. [See أحد.]
In most cases other than these two, usage differs: the latter is used in affirmative phrases only as a prefixed noun, governing the noun that follows it in the genitive, and is used absolutely in negative phrases; whereas the former is used in affirmative phrases both as a prefixed noun and otherwise. [See again أَحد.]
1.1I am not alone, without a parallel or match, in this affair—لَسْتُ فِى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ بأَوِْحَدَ
Or simply: I am not alone in it.
The feminine وَحْدَآءُ is not used.
1.2dogs having no equals or matches—أُحْدَانٌ
This plural of اوحد is so applied by a poet.
1.3such a one has no equal, like, parallel, or match—فُلَانٌ لَا وَاحِدَ لَهُ
1.4
Also: one that has no equal; one unequalled.
1.5such a person is the unequalled one of his age—فُلَانٌ وَاحِدُ دَهْرِهِ
such a person is the unequalled one of the people of his time—فُلَانٌ أَوْحَدُ أَهْلِ زَمَانِهِ
The plural of اوحد [as well as of واحد in the same sense] is أُحْدَانٌ (originally وُحْدَانٌ), as سُودَانٌ is the plural of أَسْوَدُ.
1.6[an unequalled son of his mother]—وَاحِدُ أُمِّهِ
An indeterminate expression, like نَسِيجُ وَحْدِهِ. (Hishám, Fr. L.)
1.7
Also: a man pre-eminent in knowledge or science, or in valour in war, or in other qualities; as though having no equal, and so being alone.
[In the CK, ناس is put for بَأْس.]
Plural وُحْدَانٌ and أُحْدانٌ.
1.8the One, the Sole; he whose attribute is unity—الوَاحِدُ
Also الأَحَدُ, الأَوْحَدُ, and المُتَوَحِّدُ, adjectives applied to God.
Or the first means the One in essence, who has no like nor equal, and the second the One in attributes, beside whom there is no other; or the first means the One not liable to division into parts or portions, nor to duplication, and who has no equal nor like; or the One who has ever been alone, without companion. There is no being but God to whom the first two of these adjectives are applicable together, or to whom the second is applicable alone.
See also أَحَدٌ in أحد.
1.9the human being and the horse are one in genus—الإِنْسَانُ وَالفَرَسُ وَاحِدٌ فِى الجِنْسِ
Zeyd and 'Amr are one in species—زَيْد وَعَمرْوٌ وَاحِدٌ فِى النَّوْعِ
on this sense So according to Er-Rāghib.
1.10singular, as opposed to plural—وَاحِدٌ
Plural وُحْدَانٌ.
1.11[your companions and my companions are one and the same]—أَصْحَابِى وَأَصْحَابُكَ وَاحِدٌ
they are one and the same—الجُلُوسُ وَالقُعُود وَاحِدٌ
That is, الجلوس and القعود are one and the same.
1.13eleventh, masculine—حَادِىَ عَشَرَ
eleventh, feminine—حَادِيَةَ عَشْرَةَ
In this case, [and in similar instances, such as حَادِى وَعِشْرُونَ twenty-first,] حادى and حادية are formed by transposition from وَاحِدٌ and وَاحِدَةٌ, by putting the first radical letter after the second.
[he is the eleventh of them]—هُوَ حَادِىَ عَشَرَهُمْ
[the eleventh day]—اليَوْمُ الحَادِى عَشَرَ
[the eleventh night]—اللَّيْلَةُ الحَادِيَةُ عَشْرَةَ
[Without the article it is indeclinable; but when made determinate by the article, the first word is declinable.]
[The rules for حَادِىَ عَشَرَ and its feminine are the same as those for ثَالِثَ عَشَرَ and its feminine, explained under ثلث.]
1.14
بِوَاحِدَةٍ means the same as فَقَطْ, and is often used in the sense of البَتَّةَ. Mentioned by MF under ذُرُّوحٌ.
