Also أَنْ يَفَعَلَ كَذَا.

It was unavoidable to him; it lay on him; it was his necessary, indispensable duty. Or it was binding upon him by God's express appointment, so that he would be punished for neglecting it, and it was what should be preferred and approved.

1.3.4the sale became binding, or obligatory; ratified, fixed, settled, or determined; effectual—وَجَبَ البَيْعُ

maṣdar جِبَةٌ and وُجُوبٌ.

And وَجَبَتْ يَمِينُهُ means the same as بَتَّتْ; see the article بت.

1.3.5when the sale is optional, it is binding, or obligatory—إِذَا كَانَ البَيْعُ عَنْ خِيَارٍ فَقَدْ وَجَبَ

Said in a tradition.

That is, when one says, after the contract, 'Take your choice: reject the sale, or make it effectual', and the person addressed chooses the latter, the sale is binding, even if the two parties have not yet separated.

Maṣdar وجب. The meaning is not explained, but the word follows وَجْبٌ as signifying 'a bet, and the like', so this is apparently what is meant.

1.3.8it became necessary, requisite, or unavoidable for him to do, or to suffer, such a thing—وَجَبَ عَلَيْه

Hence, sometimes: it became binding, obligatory, or incumbent on him.

1.3.9the saying, or sentence, became necessitated to take effect upon him—وَجَبَ عَلَيْهِ القَوْلُ

Or: it became requisite that the saying, or sentence, should take effect upon him.

maṣdarإِيجَابٌ مُوَاجَبَةٌ

Core sense — he made it necessary, or obligatory; he made a sale bindinggenerated

4.1

He (God) made it necessary, requisite, or unavoidable; he necessitated it; he made it, or declared it to be, binding, incumbent, or obligatory.

وجّبهُ is used in the same sense, but is rejected by some.

Literally, according to some: he made it fall on a person; see فَرَضَ.

4.1.1he made, or declared, the sale binding; he ratified it and made it settled and effectual—اوجب البَيْعَ

4.1.2he made the sale to you to be binding, or obligatory—اوجب لَكَ البَيْعَ

4.1.3he, with the other's concurrence, made the sale to him binding, or obligatory—وَاجَبَهُ البَيْعَ

In the same way, with the maṣdar مُوَاجَبَةٌ and وِجَابٌ, on the authority of Lh; in quoting his words an omission has been made, so that these two words appear to be maṣdars of اوجب.

4.1.4he made a thing, or declared it to be, binding, obligatory, or incumbent upon him—اوجب عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا

Or: unavoidable to him.

Said in a tradition: some people came to Moḥammad with these words, and he replied, 'Command him to emancipate a slave [as an expiation].'

4.1.8he of whom three, or two, children have gone before him has become entitled to paradise—أَوْجَبَ ذُو التَّلَاثَةِ وَالإِثْنَيْنِ

Said in another tradition. The children have gone before him to paradise.

A daily allowance of food; or daily maintenance: syn. وَظِيفَةٌ : (K:) i. e., what a man is accustomed to allow himself [each day] as that which is necessary, and fixed: but the word in the A is وَجْبَةٌ , q. v. According to the Imám Aboo-Haneefeh, وَاجِبٌ in matters of religion is not so strong a term as فَرْضٌ, so it may be rendered incumbent, or obligatory, or a necessary and indispensable duty, yet not shown so decisively or clearly to be such as what is termed فرض.

According to Esh-Sháfiʿee, these two terms are synonymous, meaning binding, incumbent, or obligatory by God's express appointment, as a thing for neglecting which one will be punished.

And واجب means what should be preferred and approved; El-Khattábee explains it so as it occurs in the following tradition.

That is, by everyone who has experienced a nocturnal pollution.
