muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُيَتِرُهُmaṣdarوَتْرٌ
Core sense — he made it single, or an odd number; he slew his relationgenerated
1.1
He made it (a number) single, or one and no more.; maṣdars وَتْرٌ and اوترهُ; synonym أَفَذَّهُ or أَفْرَدَهُ.
It is said that only the latter verb is used of a number, but both are said to be so used in the M.
1.1.1he made the people, who were an even number, to be an odd number—
maṣdars وَتْرٌ and أَوْتَرَهُمْ.
[The people were an odd number and I made them an even number, and they were an even number and I made them an odd number]—
he made the prayer consist of an odd number of rakʿas—وَتَرَ الصَّلَاةَ
Said by 'Aṭāʾ.
Also أَوْتَرَهَا, وَتَّرَهَا and أَوْتَرَ فِىالصَّلَاةِ in the same sense.
The prayer so made is termed وِتْر: as with a prayer performed in the night, consisting of three rakʿas, particularly called صَلَاةُ الوِتْرِ. He performed prayers of two rakʿas each, two and two together, then a single rakʿa at the end, making what he performed an odd number.
أَوْتَرَ alone means he performed the prayer called الوِتْر; or he performed prayers of an odd number of rakʿas, two and two together, and then a single rakʿa at the end.
[God is one only; He loves the odd number; so perform the prayer of an odd number of rakʿas, O people of the Qur'ān]—
when you use stones in purification, use an odd number—إِذَا ٱسْتَجْمَرْتَ فَأَوْتِرْ
From a tradition.
From another tradition. The purification meant is إِسْتِنْجَآء: use three stones for that purpose, or five, or seven, and not an even number.
1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe slew his relation, so separating him from him and leaving him solitary—وَتَرَهُ
such a one committed a crime against such a one by slaying his family, or by taking them away—وَتَرَ فُلَانٌ فُلَانًا أَهْلَهُ
he committed a crime against him by taking away his property—وَتَرَةُ مَالَهُ
Or: he slew a person belonging to him, or related to him, without the latter obtaining revenge, or retaliation, for the blood of the slain. Or: he slew a person belonging to him, or related to him; or took property belonging to him.
The verb is also doubly transitive.
Or he made him suffer loss or detriment in respect of his property; or he deprived him of it in part, or altogether; synonym
he made him suffer loss in respect of his right or due—وَتَرَهُ حَقَّهُ
Or he abridged him, or deprived him, or defrauded him, of it partly or wholly; synonym
whoever misses the afternoon prayer is as though he had his family slain and his property taken away—مَنْ فَاتَتْهُ صَلَاةُ العَصْرِ فَكَأَنَّمَا وُتِرَ أَهْلَهُ وَمَالَهُ
Or: as though he had his family and his property taken away; or as though he were deprived of his family and his property, and remained alone. The loss of family and property is thus likened to the loss of the recompense.
اهله and ماله are in the accusative case as objects; اهله is a second object, the first being understood as implied in the verb. But if we read أَهْلُهُ وَمَالُهُ, according to another relation, اهله supplies the place of the agent, nothing being understood, and the family and property are the objects to which the loss is made to relate.
he who sits in an assembly in which God is not mentioned is liable to loss—مَنْ جَلَسَ مَجْلِسًا لَمْ يَذْكُرِ ٱللّٰهَ فِيهِ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ تِرَةً
And He will not deprive you of anything of the recompense of your deeds—
Or, as some say, liable to a claim of reparation for wrongful conduct.
Qur'ān 47:37. Or: will not make you suffer loss in respect of your deeds; as one says
1.2.1he executed blood-revenge upon him—وَتَرَهُ
Or he did so wrongfully; explained by أَصَابَهُ بِذَحْلٍ.
1.2.2he overtook him with some displeasing, abominable, or evil action—
1.2.3
He frightened him; he terrified him.
