the maṣdar is the word glossed here.

In the time of paganism a man, when a daughter was born to him, would bury her alive as soon as her mother brought her forth, out of fear of disgrace and poverty; but this is forbidden in the Qur'ān 17:33.

Some of them used to bury their children alive in times of famine, and the tribe of Kindeh used to bury their daughters alive.

A term used in this sense in a tradition; المَوْؤُودَةُ الصُّغْرَى is used in the same way, because the act resembles that of burying a child alive and is done with the same motive.
