Muḍāriʿ هَمِزَ and هَمُزَ.

He pressed it, squeezed it, or pinched it — for instance a walnut or some other thing in the hand, or a man's head, or a spear-shaft, with the مَهَامِز, to straighten it.

1.1.1want drove him to him or it—هَمَزَتْهُ إِلَيْهِ الحَاجَةُ

He pushed, impelled, or repelled, him or it, meaning anything at all; also لَمَزَهُ and the like.

He blamed him, upbraided him, or reproached him; he found fault with him. The maṣdar is synonymous with عَيْبٌ; also لَمْزٌ.

Or he spoke evil of him behind his back, in a way he disliked, mentioning vices or faults as chargeable to him, though it might be with truth; synonym إِغْتَابَهُ فِى غَيْبَتِهِ and [so] هَمَزَهُ فِى قَفَاهُ: he backbit him.

This is from هَمَزَهُ in the first of the senses explained above, because what is termed هَمْز in speech, or هَمْزَة [i.e. the sound so called], is [as it were] pressed, or squeezed, out of its place of utterance [by a sudden emission of the voice forced out after a compression of the passage where it has been stopped].

It was said to an Arab of the desert, أَتَهْمِزُ الفَأْرَةَ [meaning: do you pronounce الفَأْرَة with hemz, or hemzeh?], and he said, understanding the words to mean 'do you squeeze the rat, or mouse?', السِّنَّوْرُ يَهْمِزُهَا [The cat squeezes it].

A 'Obeyd: Muḥammad explained it as meaning madness, or insanity; synonym مُوتَةٌ, that is, جُنُونٌ, because it arises from the goading and the pressing or pinching of the devil.

The former is a generic noun, the latter the ism waḥda.

A genuine word, old, heard [from the Arabs of classical times], and well known; so called for the reason given above: see 1, last sense. So says Kh.

So no regard is due to what is said in some of the commentaries on the Keshsháf, that the term همزة used in this way has not been heard [from any of the Arabs of classical times], and that its name is أَلْفٌ.

Several persons say that the term همزة is mostly applied to the alif that has a vowel, and الف to the sākin letter.

Aboo-Is-hák: taken together with لُمَزَةٌ, one who speaks evil of men, or backbites them, and defames them.

Abu-l-'Abbás: or both together, one who goes about much, or habitually, with slander, separating companions and stirring up enmity between friends.

هُمَزَةٌ is applied to a man and to a woman, [like لَمُزَةٌ,] because its ة is there to denote intensiveness, not the feminine gender.

هُمَّازٌ [which is the plural of هَامِزٌ] means persons who blame, upbraid, reproach, or find fault with others behind their backs, much or habitually: [or, more correctly, it does not have an intensive meaning.]
