The Hudhalee (Aboo-Sahm Usámeh) says: Slender in the belly, an object of the chase, in a part of the desert far from water and pasture; he will not come to the water otherwise than time after time.

shāhid

أَقَبَّ طَرِيدٍ بِنُزْهِ الفَلَاپِ لَا يَرِدُ المَاءَ إِلَّا ٱنْتِيَابَا

The poet is describing a wild ass.

According to one relation, the last word is اِئْتِيَابَا, meaning "coming by night".

1.1.3he drove camels early in the morning to the water and was at the water again in the evening—نَابَ

Or it has the meaning already explained; or he returned time after time. According to the Kesh-shāf and AHei, the first meaning is: he entered upon the good turn.

In the TA, for الخيل read الخير.

1.1.5he supplied my place; he acted in my place, as my substitute, deputy, or agent—نَابَ عَنِّى

maṣdar نَوْبٌ and مَنَابٌ. The first of these maṣdars, mentioned by Th, is left out in some copies of the S.

Also نِيَابَةٌ, the only maṣdar mentioned in the Msb; but this last, though also mentioned in the L, is rejected by Th and the other early authorities as not belonging to the classical language of the Arabs.

فِى كَذَا in such an affair.

1.1.6it (a thing) supplied the place of another thing—نَابَ عَنْهُ

He it is Who showeth you his Signs, and sendeth down sustenance for you from the sky: but only those receive admonition who turn (to Allah).

By means of the حَصَاة القَسْمِ or المَقْلةُ, which is a pebble put into a vessel: then as much water as will cover the pebble is poured into the vessel. People on a journey do this when they have little water, and so divide it into shares.

That is, of the kind termed ربيع, meaning good rain, but inferior to what is termed جود; yet this is an excellent rain if other rain follows it.

, from اناب الى اللّٰه , Repenting, &c. (TA.) مُنِيبٌ act. part. n. of 4, A person making another to supply his or another's place; &c. (Msb.) See the verb. مُنِيبٌ Copious rain: and good rain, of the [rain termed] رَبِيعٌ : (K:) or, accord. to En-Nadr Ibn-Shumeyl, copious rain ( مَطَرٌ جَوْدٌ ) is termed منيب : and you say, أَصَابَنَا رَبِيعُ صِدْقٍ منيبٌ [There fell upon us an excellent, copious rain, of such as is termed ربيع ; meaning] good rain, but inferior to what is termed جود ; but this is an excellent rain if followed by other rain.
