maṣdar نَعَجٌ and نُعُوجٌ: a verb like طَلَبٌ — so in J's handwriting.

Or, with reference to a colour, a verb like صَخِبَ. So according to an insertion in a copy of the S read to IB, and in one of M. Fresnel's copies of the S, in a copy in my possession, and in the L, which gives both forms of the verb.

1.2he (a man, Az, or a camel) became fat—نَعِجَ

AA said it occurs in a poem of Dhu-r-Rummeh, but Sh did not find it in his poetry and thinks it strange; Az, however, confirms it on the authority of an Arab of the desert.

Az adds that it means he (a man) became fat and in good condition; also, he increased, and became swollen, or inflated.

نَهِجَ is said to have the same meaning.

According to A 'Obeyd, no wild animal but the cow is called by this name: [but see above].

The Arabs speak of gazelles as though they were goats, calling the male تَيْسٌ, and of wild bulls or cows as though they were sheep, calling the female نَعْجَةٌ.

قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦ ۖ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبْغِى بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَّا هُمْ ۗ وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّـٰهُ فَٱسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ ۩

(David) said: "He has undoubtedly wronged thee in demanding thy (single) ewe to be added to his (flock of) ewes: truly many are the partners (in business) who wrong each other: Not so do those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and how few are they?"... and David gathered that We had tried him: he asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down, bowing (in prostration), and turned (to Allah in repentance).
