Core sense — he made a vow, binding it on himself; he knew of a thing and was cautious of itgenerated
1.1he made a vow that he would do such a thing—
Muḍāriʿ نَذِرَ and نَذُرَ; maṣdar نَذْرٌ and نُذُورٌ. The vow may be either absolute or conditional, as explained below.
he made a future action binding, or obligatory, on himself—انتذر
he vowed a vow—انتذر نَذْرًا
The same as نَذَرَ.
I vowed my property; I made a vow to give it—نَذَرْتُ مَالِى
[and نَذِرَ, as implied in the K].
I made it binding on myself, of my own free will, to do or give such a thing to God—
Muḍāriʿ نَذُرَ and نَذِرَ.
That is, some religious service, or an alms, and the like.
Or نَذْرٌ means promising conditionally, as when one says, "Such a thing shall be obligatory on me if God restores my sick [son or other] to health": this is called نَذْرٌ, but the saying "I impose on myself the giving of a dīnār as alms" is not so called.
he (the father) appointed the child by a vow to serve the church—نَذَرَ الوَلَدَ
she (the mother) appointed the child by a vow to serve the church—نَذَرَتْهُ
The child is appointed to be a minister or servant of the church, or of a place set apart for religious services, exercises, or acts of devotion: so in the Qur'ān 3:31.
on this sense Doing this is repeatedly forbidden in the traditions; but what is meant is doing it in the belief that one may gain by it something God has not decreed to happen, or turn away from oneself something decreed to befall one. Even so, if a man does it, fulfilment is obligatory on him.
1.2he knew of the thing; or he knew of it and was cautious of it, on his guard against it, or in fear of it—نَذِرَ بِالشَّىْءِ
maṣdar نَذَرٌ and نَذَارَةٌ and نِذَارَةٌ. Some assert that it has no maṣdar, like عَسَى and the like, the Arabs being content to use أَنْ followed by the verb instead, as is said in the 'Ināyeh, on the Qur'ān chapter 14.
the people knew of the enemy; or knew of them and prepared themselves for them, or were cautious of them and in fear of them—نَذِرَ القَوْمُ بالعَدُوِّ
have knowledge of the people and be cautious of them, on your guard against them, or in fear of them—إِنْذَرِ القَوْمَ
Said in a tradition.

2:270
And whatever ye spend in charity or devotion, be sure Allah knows it all. But the wrong-doers have no helpers.
21:45
Say, "I do but warn you according to revelation": But the deaf will not hear the call, (even) when they are warned!
