Form 1نَخَرَ2 senses
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarنَخِيرٌ نَخَرٌ

Core sense — he snorted; it became old, wasted, and crumblinggenerated

1.1she made the same sound, as though she were possessedنَخَرَتْ

Muḍāriʿ نَخُرَ and نَخِرَ; maṣdar نَخِيرٌ and نَخْرٌ. The latter is in the CK but is omitted in the manuscript copies of the K.

Said of a horse, of an ass, and of a man: [he snorted; and he snored;] he made a sound with his nose; he drew the breath out at length from the خَيَاشِيم [or air-passages of the nose]; he made a sound from his خياشيم as though it were a musical note coming out convulsively; he uttered a prolonged sound from his خياشيم.

As: the sound horses make that is called نَخِيرٌ comes from the nostrils; the one called شَخِيرٌ from the mouth; and the one called كَرِيرٌ from the chest.

The gloss of this expression involves sexual content that Lane gave in Latin.

Said of a woman; muḍāriʿ نَخُرَ and نَخِرَ, or نَخَرَ.

1.2it became old and wasted and crumblingنَخِرَ

Said of a thing, of a bone, and of wood: old and wasted and soft, crumbling when touched.

Nounنَخِرٌ1 sense

Core sense — old and wasted and crumbling, said of a bone or woodgenerated

1a bone, and wood, old and wasted and crumblingنَاخِرٌ

Also: old and wasted and soft, crumbling when touched.

The feminine of each is formed with ة.

Or the first means a bone old and wasted; and the second, a hollow bone with a hole passing through it, from which comes, when the wind blows, a sound like the one called نَخِيرٌ [see نَخَرَ]: a bone into which the wind enters and from which it then issues with that sound; a bone, and wood, in which the wind makes that sound.

Of the two readings in the Qur'ān 79:11, عِظَامًا نَاخِرَةً and عِظَامًا نَخِرَةً, Fr prefers the first, as agreeing in form with the words that end the other verses; and he says that نَاخِرَةٌ and نَخِرَةٌ are the same in meaning, like طَامِعٌ and طَمِعٌ.

[The most common form.] Originally, the place of the sound called نَخِيرٌ. See 1.

1.1the hole of the nose; the nostrilمِنْخِرٌ

It has kesr to the م, to agree with the vowel of the خ, as they say مِنْتِنٌ [for مُنْتِنٌ].

Both of these words are irregular, since مِفْعِلٌ is not one of the [regular] measures, and it is said that there is no word of this measure besides these two.

Or مِنْخِرٌ is for مِنْخِيرٌ, and in the same way مِنْتِنٌ is for مِنْتِينٌ, which is the original form.

Also مِنْخَرٌ, مُنْخُرٌ, and مُنْخُورٌ, like عُصْفُورٌ and مُلْمُولٌ [in the CK, erroneously, مَلْمُول].

The last is [said to be] of the dialect of Teiyi, and is said to occur in a verse of Gheylán; but IB says that the right reading there is مَنْحُور, with ح, meaning the same as نَحْرٌ. Sgh gives this in the article نحر.

Plural مَنَاخِرُ and مَنَاخِيرُ [the latter irregular, unless it is the plural of مِنْخِيرٌ or مُنْخُورٌ.]
