Unprosperousness, unfortunateness, inauspiciousness, or unluckiness; the opposite of سَعْدٌ. Said of stars, and of other things.

Plural, of paucity, أَنْحُسٌ; of multitude, نُحُوسٌ. مَنَاحِسُ is an irregular plural of the same word, and means the same as مَشَائِمُ, which is in like manner an irregular plural of شُؤْمٌ.

[In Har, p. 375, a doubt is expressed about مَنَاحِسُ, whether it is a plural of نَحْسٌ, but only from not knowing of any authority for its being so; it may, however, be the plural of مَنْحَسَةٌ and not of نَحْسٌ.]

In the Qur'ān 54:19 some read this; others read نحس as an adjective. See نَحِسٌ.

Nounنُحَاسٌ3 senses

Core sense — copper; brass; smoke, or sparks from beaten metalgenerated

And نِحَاسٌ and نَحَاسٌ: the last of these, or all of them, on the authority of Abu-l-'Abbās El-Kawāshee.

A word of well-known meaning: copper; and brass. Ibn-Buzurj: the same as قِطْرٌ, or صُفْرٌ.

Or a species of صُفْر that is intensely red. A chaste Arabic word.

Also fire; and the sparks that fall from brass, or from iron, when it is beaten with the hammer.

Or نُحَاسٌ means smoke, as in the Qur'ān 55:35; so Fr, Az, Bd and others, and according to Az all the interpreters of the Qur'ān; and it is surprising that the author of the K has left this meaning out.

But some say otherwise. Ibn-Buzurj: نِحَاسٌ means the smoke of صُفْر, and نُحَاسٌ means صُفْر itself.

Or it means smoke in which there is no flame; or smoke that rises high, whose heat is weak and which is free from flame; or molten صُفْر.

And some read نُحُسٌ, which is the plural.
