muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُنَخِتَmaṣdarنَحْتٌ نَحِيتٌ
Core sense — he cut, or hewed; he shaped it by cuttinggenerated
1.1[Cut, or hew, for yourself, of the wood, what will be enough for you for fuel]—اِنْتَحِتْ مِنَ الخَشَبِ مَا يَكْفِيكَ لِلْوَقُودِ
against analogy; also نَخَتَ, the form IJ preferred because of the guttural letter, though MF disputes this; and نَخُتَ, the form of weakest authority..
He cut, or hewed; he formed, or fashioned, by cutting; he cut out, or shaped out; he chipped: same as بَرَى. He worked wood and the like as a carpenter: same as نَجَرَ. He pared, peeled, or barked it, taking off its outer covering by paring or by wearing away the outside; he sawed it. [See also لَحَتَ.]
According to some, the operation called نحت is performed only on something hard and strong, such as stone and wood and the like.
[انتحت seems to mean He cut, etc., for himself:]
1.1.1he cut out, or hewed out, a house in the mountain—نَحَتَ بَيْتًا فِى الجَبَلِ
Muḍāriʿ نَخِتَ and نَخَتَ.
In the Qur'ān 15:82, El-Ḥasan [El-Baṣree] reads يَنْحَتُونَ. [According to the K his reading is يَنْحَاتُونَ, but I find this nowhere else, and I believe it to be a mistake.]
1.1.2figurative · مجاز[He was fashioned after the model of generosity; made generous by nature]—نُحِتَ عَلَى الكَرَمِ
1.1.3he had sexual intercourse with the girl—نَحَتَ
لَحَتَ is used in the same way, and is the better known of the two.
1.1.4figurative · مجازhe beat him, or struck him, with a staff or stick—نَحَتَ
.
[لَحَتَ is used in the same sense.]
1.1.5he threw him down flat—نَحَتَ
1.1.6figurative · مجازhe blamed, reproached, or reviled a man—نَحَتَ بِلِسَانِهِ
[See also لَحَتَ.]
1.1.7figurative · مجازit emaciated a camel—نَحَتَ
Said of a journey, or of travel.
It also made a man less; made him thin, or slender.
1.1.8he sighed aloud—نَحَتَ
[Muḍāriʿ نَخِتَ and نَخَتَ?] Maṣdars نَحِيتٌ and نَحِيتَةٌ.
The maṣdars mean the same as نَئِيتٌ and زَحِيرٌ.
