(S.) نَحَّبْنَا سَيْرَنَا We pursued our journey laboriously, or with energy. (TA.) نحّب السَّفَرُ فُلَانًا The journey harassed such a one, (K,) being long. (TA.) نحّب عَلَى أَمْرٍ , and فِى أَمْرٍ , He applied himself to a thing, or set about it, and adhered to it. (TA.)

Talhah said this to Ibn-'Abbás.

The meaning: will you have me contend with you for glory, you counting up your excellencies and the honour you get from your ancestors and the like, and I doing the same, and you leaving the Prophet out of the question, not mentioning your relationship to him, since that excellence is conceded to you?

Or تَرْفَعُ النبى: it is noted in the margin of a copy of the S that J left the final letter of ترفع without a vowel point, either fet-hah or dammeh.

Originally it means: he fulfilled his vow; see the Qur'ān 33:23 — as though he had bound himself by a vow to fight until he died.

Or it means: he ended his term, or period of life; he ended his days. [Or he finished his time: (as implied in the S): or he yielded his soul: or he accomplished his want:] from the meanings given below.

Among the Believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah: of them some have completed their vow (to the extreme), and some (still) wait: but they have never changed (their determination) in the least:

i. q. قُرْعَةٌ [A lot used in sortilege: or lots collectively: or sortilege itself;] (K;) from نَاحَبَهَ “ he cited him before a judge; ” “ he contended with him for glory; ” and “ he laid a bet, or wager, with him; ” because it is, as it were, a judge, or that which decides, in a case of sortilege. El-Kumeyt says:

تَخَذْنَ بِنَا عَرْضَ الفَلَاةِ وَطُولَهَاكَمَا صَارَ عَنْ يُمْنَى يَدَيْهِ المُنَحِّبُ

By المنحّب the man is meant.

ISd says: Th cites this verse and explains it thus — this was a man who swore, saying, If I do not overcome, I will cut off my hand. Th seems to take it as carrying the sense of vowing. So in the L. But it needs further consideration.

He proceeded, or journeyed, in a direct course, not desiring [to pursue] any other: as though he had made a vow to do so. ElKumeyt says, 1 By المنحّب is meant the man. ISd says, Th cites this verse, and says in explanation of it, This was a man who swore, saying, If I do not overcome, I will cut off my hand. He seems to consider it as implying the signification of vowing. So in the L. But it requires consideration.
