muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarنَبْزٌ

Core sense — he called him by a by-name, or nickname; he reproached himgenerated

1.1such a one nicknames the children—فُلَانٌ يُنَبِّزُ بِالصَّبْيَانِ

he called him, or named him, by a by-name, surname, or nickname; synonym لَقَّبَهُ, which mostly means he called him by a nickname, a name of reproach, or an insulting title.

Also نبّزهُ; or that form has teshdeed to show that the action is much, or often repeated, or applied to many objects.

Synonym يُلَقِّبْهُمْ.

النَّبْزُ is also synonymous with اللَّمْزُ, or is like it: that is, نَبَزَهُ also means he upbraided, or reproached, him, or the like.

Or: they upbraided, reproached, or reviled one another, calling one another by names of reproach.

So in the Qurʾān 49:11, where doing this is forbidden.

O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong.

According to the Msb it seems to be نَبْزٌ, for it is there said to be a maṣdar used as a substantive, but I have never met with this form anywhere else.

Kh, contrary to common usage, makes it mean a proper name; he says that names are of two kinds: أَسْمَآءُ نَبَزٍ, such as زَيْدٌ and عَمْرُو, and أَسْمَآءُ عَامٍّ, such as فَرَسٌ and رَجُلٌ, and the like.
