Form 1مَازَهُ3 senses · 2 main
maṣdarمَيْزٌmuḍāriʿيَمِيزُهُ

Core sense — he set it apart, he separated it; he distinguished between thingsgenerated

1.1he put aside, or removed, what was hurtful from the road—مَازَ الأَذَى مِنَ الطَّرِّيق

maṣdar مَيْزٌ and ميّزهُ; also maṣdar تَمْيِيزٌ, or this last has an intensive meaning. He put it apart, or away, or aside; he removed it, or separated it, from another thing or other things; also امازهُ [or the second, rather, he did so much, or greatly, or widely; like زَيَّلَهُ.]

One says مَازَهُ مِنْهُ and ميّزهُ.

[That God may separate the evil from the good]—لِيَمِيزَ ٱللّٰهُ الخَبِيثَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبِ

This is in the Qur'ān 8:38.

[It seems also, from what is said in the A, that مَايَزْتُ بَيْنَهُمَا means I separated the two, besides having another meaning, given below.]

he separated one part of the thing from another—مَازَ الشَّىْءَ

The muḍāriʿ and maṣdar are as above. فَصَلَ بَعْضَهُ مِنْ بَعْضٍ or عَنْ بَعْضٍ is explained in the K as meaning فَضَّلَ بَعْضَهُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ [he judged part of the thing to excel another]; but the explanation in the M is the right one.

he separated the things after knowing them—ميّز الأَشْيَآءَ
1.1.1he distinguished, or discerned, between the things—مَازَ بَيْنَ الأَشْيَآءِ
he distinguished, or discerned, between the things—مَيَّزَ بَيْنَهَا

[Hence, he distinguished it, or discerned it.]

This is what is meant by saying that المَيْزُ also has the sense of التَّمْيِيزُ بَيْنَ الأَشْيَآءِ.

[I distinguished, or discerned, between the two]—مَايَزْتُ بَيْنَهُمَا
[the age of discrimination;] the age at which one knows what is good for him and what is harmful—سِنُّ التَّمْيِيزِ

From ميّز الاشيآء in the sense explained above is apparently derived this phrase, used by the doctors of practical law.

Or, according to some, التَّمْيِيز is a faculty in the brain by which meanings are drawn out.

1.2he removed from one place to another—مَازَ

Said of a man; here the verb is intransitive. See also form 8.

مَّا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيَذَرَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَنتُمْ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّىٰ يَمِيزَ ٱلْخَبِيثَ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبِ ۗ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُطْلِعَكُمْ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَجْتَبِى مِن رُّسُلِهٖ مَن يَشَآءُ ۖ فَـَٔامِنُوا بِٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهٖ ۚ وَإِن تُؤْمِنُوا وَتَتَّقُوا فَلَكُمْ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ

Allah will not leave the believers in the state in which ye are now, until He separates what is evil from what is good nor will He disclose to you the secrets of the Unseen. But He chooses of His Messengers (For the purpose) whom He pleases. So believe in Allah. And His messengers: And if ye believe and do right, ye have a reward without measure.

8:37
لِيَمِيزَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْخَبِيثَ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبِ وَيَجْعَلَ ٱلْخَبِيثَ بَعْضَهٗ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ فَيَرْكُمَهٗ جَمِيعًا فَيَجْعَلَهٗ فِى جَهَنَّمَ ۚ أُولَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

In order that Allah may separate the impure from the pure, put the impure, one on another, heap them together, and cast them into Hell. They will be the ones to have lost.

, aor. يَمِيزُهُ , inf. n. مَيْزٌ ; (S, A, Msb, K;) and ميّزهُ (S, K,) inf. n. تَمْيِيزٌ ; (S;) or the latter has an intensive signification; (Msb;) He put it, or set it, apart, away, or aside; removed it; or separated it; (S, A, Msb, K;) from another thing, or other things; (Msb;) as also امازهُ : (K:) [or the second, rather, he did so much, or greatly, or widely; like زَيَّلَهُ .] You say, مَازَهُ مِنْهُ , and ميّزهُ . (A.) Ex. مَازَ الأَذَى مِنَ الطَّرِّيق He put aside, or removed, what was hurtful from the road. (TA.) And it is said in the Kur, [viii. 38,] لِيَمِيزَ ٱللّٰهُ الخَبِيثَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبِ [That God may separate, or sever, the evil from the good]. (Msb.) [It seems also, from what is said in the A, that مَايَزْتُ بَيْنَهُمَا signifies I separated them two: besides having another signification, which see below.] You say also مَازَ الشَّىْءَ , (aor. and inf. n. as above, TA,) meaning, He separated one part of the thing from another; فَصَلَ بَعْضَهُ مِنْ بَعْضٍ , (M, TA,) or عَنْ بَعْضٍ : (as in a copy of the A:) expl. in the K as signifying فَضَّلَ بَعْضَهُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ [he judged, or made, part of the thing to excel, or to have excelled, another]; but the explanation in the M is the right. (TA.) And ميّز الأَشْيَآءَ He separated the things after knowledge of them. (Msb.) [Hence, He distinguished it, or discriminated it, or discerned it. And مَازَ بَيْنَ الأَشْيَآءِ , and مَيَّزَ بَيْنَهَا , He distinguished, or discriminated, or discerned, between the things. This is what is meant by its being said,] المَيْزُ also signifies التَّمْيِيزُ بَيْنَ الأَشْيَآءِ . (TA.) You say also, مَايَزْتُ بَيْنَهُمَا [I distinguished, or discriminated, or discerned, between them two]. (A.) From ميّز الاشيآء , meaning as explained above, is [also], app., derived the phrase سِنُّ التَّمْيِيزِ , used by the doctors of practical law, as signifying, [The age of discrimination;] the age at which one knows what things are beneficial to him and what are hurtful to him: or, accord. to some, التَّمْيِيز is a faculty in the brain whereby meanings are elicited. (Msb.) مَازَ [is also intrans., and signifies] He (a man) removed from one place to another. (IAar, K.) See also 8.

The like is said in the Qur'ān 67:8, figuratively, of hell.

All these forms have the same meaning; but in the phrase مِزْتُهُ فَلَمْ يَمَّزْ [as though meaning I set it apart, but it did not remain so] Lh allows the verbs to be only in these two forms: [though انماز is used in other cases; for]

he shifted from his place of prayer, or left it for another—انماز عَنْ مُصَلَّاهُ
the people became set apart, one from another—امتار القَوْمُ

The former also: they withdrew aside, in a company or troop; also استمازوا, and in like manner تمايزوا: they became separated, and they formed themselves into separate companies, or troops, and went away one from another.

That is, تميّز بَعْضُهُمْ مِنْ بَعْضٍ.

التَّمَايُزُ is said to mean التَّحَزُّبُ وَالتَّنَافُرُ.

[امتاز, and the other forms named at the start of this article as having the same meaning, also mean it was, or became, distinguished, or discerned; in this sense تميّز is the most common.]
