Core sense — he acted gently towards him; he granted him a delaygenerated
He acted gently, or in a leisurely way, towards him.
He granted him some delay or respite; he left him alone for a while.
In both senses it is equivalent to أَرْوَدَهُ, under the article رود.

Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile).
