What kept men back from belief when Guidance came to them, was nothing but this: they said, "Has Allah sent a man (like us) to be (His) Messenger?"

20:92

قَالَ يَـٰهَـٰرُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ رَأَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّوٓا۟

(Moses) said: "O Aaron! what kept thee back, when thou sawest them going wrong,

21:43

أَمْ لَهُمْ ءَالِهَةٌ تَمْنَعُهُم مِّن دُونِنَا ۚ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَلَا هُم مِّنَّا يُصْحَبُونَ

Or have they gods that can guard them from Us? They have no power to aid themselves, nor can they be defended from Us.

38:75

قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَىَّ ۖ أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلْعَالِينَ

(Allah) said: "O Iblis! What prevents thee from prostrating thyself to one whom I have created with my hands? Art thou haughty? Or art thou one of the high (and mighty) ones?"

107:7

وَيَمْنَعُونَ ٱلْمَاعُونَ

But refuse (to supply) (even) neighbourly needs.

He prevented, hindered, held back, [impeded, withheld, arrested, restrained, kept, debarred, precluded, inhibited, forbade, prohibited, interdicted:] (MA, KL, &c.:) he denied, or refused; doubly trans.; (S, K, &c.:) مَنْعٌ is the contr. of إِعْطَآءٌ . (S, Mgh, K.) مَنَعَهُ [He protected it, or defended it, or guarded it, (namely a place or the like) from, or against, encroachment, invasion, or attack:] he protected, defended, or guarded, him. He disputed, or contested, with him the thing; he refused him the thing; he worked on him, or contended with him, to make him give up the thing. [He tried to turn him away from the thing, and to prevent his obtaining it or doing it; he prevented him from obtaining or doing the thing while being prevented by him in turn, that is, each prevented the other.]
