[with which مُكْثٌ and مِكثٌ are synonymous] and مِكِّيثَى [like خِصِّيصَى] and مِكِّيثَآءُ [like خِصِّيصَآءُ] and مَكَثٌ and مُكُوثٌ and مُكْثَانٌ and مَكَاثٌ and مَكَاثَةٌ [this last being the maṣdar of مَكُثَ]. The meaning is: he tarried; he tarried and waited, or expected; he was patient and waited; he stayed or stopped, expecting; he loitered; he paused in expectation.

فَمَكَثَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ فَقَالَ أَحَطتُ بِمَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِۦ وَجِئْتُكَ مِن سَبَإٍۭ بِنَبَإٍ يَقِينٍ

But the Hoopoe tarried not far: he (came up and) said: "I have compassed (territory) which thou hast not compassed, and I have come to thee from Saba with tidings true.
