He made it (namely a town) a مِصْر , i. e. a limit, or boundary, between two things. (IAar.) مَصَّرُوا المَكَانَ , inf. n. تَمْصِيرٌ , They made the place, or appointed it to be, a مِصْر [meaning a city, or town, such as is thus called]. (M, * K.) It is said of 'Omar, مَصَّرَ الأَمْصَارَ , (TA,) which is a phrase like مَدَّنَ المُدُنَ , (S,) [and signifying He appointed the cities, or towns called أَمْصَار : or] مصّر الامصار signifies he built the [cities, or towns, called] امصار : (A:) among which امصار were El-Basrah and El-Koofeh. A partition, barrier, or thing coming between two things; also a limit, or boundary, between two lands. Also مَاصِرٌ.

Plural مُصُورٌ.

The people of Egypt, or of Hejer, or of both, write this in their contracts.

Those ordinances are the ones termed حُدُود; and in such a town the spoil or tribute termed فَىْء and the alms termed صَدَقَات are divided without consulting the Khaleefeh. This is its meaning in the language of the Arabs.

Or: that town whose greatest mosque will not hold its inhabitants.

It is masculine and perfectly declinable, and feminine and imperfectly declinable. [But this remark seems properly to relate to the word when used as the name of the metropolis of Egypt, and of Egypt itself.]

Plural أَمْصَارٌ.

The dual, المِصْرَانِ, is applied to El-Koofeh and El-Basrah.

وَنَادَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ فِى قَوْمِهِۦ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ أَلَيْسَ لِى مُلْكُ مِصْرَ وَهَـٰذِهِ ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِىٓ ۖ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then?

Some say it is said specially of a bird, of an animal with a soft foot, خُفّ, such as the camel, and of animals with a cloven hoof.

Plural, of the smaller number, أَمْصِرَةٌ; of the larger number, مُصْرَانٌ; and plural of the plural مَصَارِينُ.

This last is according to Sb, but some say it is not established, and Lth says it is a mistake. Az says it is the plural of مُصْرَانٌ, and that the Arabs gave it this form of plural imagining the م to be a radical letter.

Some say that مَصِيرٌ is of the measure مَفْعِلٌ [originally مَصْيِرٌ], derived from صَار إِلَيْهِ الطَّعَامُ [“ the food passed to it ”], and they say مُصْرَانٌ, just as they say مُسْلَانٌ as plural of مَسِيلُ المَآءِ, likening مَفْعِلٌ to فَعِيلٌ.

مِصْرَانٌ is also a dialectal variant of مُصْرَانٌ.
