Core sense — possessing glory, noble, beneficent; exalted, sublimegenerated
1a man possessing, or characterized by, glory, honour, dignity, or nobility; glorious, noble—مَجْد
This word is from مَجُدَ; مَاجِدٌ, from مَجَدَ, is used in the same way.
Both mean glorious, in a state of honour or dignity, noble, abounding in good, and beneficent, but the first is stronger. Or the second means characterized by gloriousness or nobleness of actions, or by personal glory or nobility together with goodness of actions, the first being stronger. Or both mean generous and munificent, and the second good in disposition and liberal, bountiful, or generous.
Plural of either word: أَمْجَادٌ.
1.1the Glorious, or Great, or Great in dignity, who gives liberally—المَجِيدُ
Said of God, as an adjective.
Or: the Bountiful and beneficent; المَاجِدُ is used in the same way. Or the first means He who is glorified for his deeds.
1.2exalted; sublime; noble—مَجِيدٌ
Applied in the Qur'ān as an adjective to the throne of God, and to the Qur'ān.
In chapter 85, verse 15, instead of ذُو العَرْشِ المَجِيدِ some read ذو العَرْشِ المَجِيدُ, making المجيد an adjective of ذو; and in the same chapter, verse 21, instead of هُوَ قُرَآنٌ مَجِيدٌ some read هو قُرْآنٌ مَجِيدٍ, making مجيد an adjective of God.
المَجِيدُ alone also occurs in a tradition meaning the Qur'ān.
