maṣdar لَهَثٌ, لَهَاثٌ and لَهَثَانٌ.

He thirsted, he was thirsty; or thirst heated his belly, or inside.

maṣdar لَهْثٌ, لُهَاثٌ and لَهِثَ; also with muḍāriʿ لَهَثَ and التهث.

Said of a dog and of a man, and, in the case of the second verb, of a bird also.

Or لَهَثَ means his breath rose, from fatigue or weariness; or, said of a dog, he put out his tongue from thirst; and, said of a man, he was fatigued, or weary.

وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَرَفَعْنَـٰهُ بِهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّهٗٓ أَخْلَدَ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ ۚ فَمَثَلُهٗ كَمَثَلِ ٱلْكَلْبِ إِن تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْهِ يَلْهَثْ أَوْ تَتْرُكْهُ يَلْهَث ۚ ذَّٰلِكَ مَثَلُ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا ۚ فَٱقْصُصِ ٱلْقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

If it had been Our will, We should have elevated him with Our signs; but he inclined to the earth, and followed his own vain desires. His similitude is that of a dog: if you attack him, he lolls out his tongue, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls out his tongue. That is the similitude of those who reject Our signs; So relate the story; perchance they may reflect.
