Form 1لَمَسَهُ4 senses · 1 main
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarلَمْسٌ مُلَامَسَةٌ

Core sense — he felt it, he touched it; he sought for itgenerated

1.1he felt it, or touched it, with his handمَسَّهُ

Muḍāriʿ لَمُسَ and لَمِسَ.

He felt it, or touched it; synonym مَسَّهُ. (IAar, Az, IDrd, El-Fārābee)

Or he put his hand to it; or he felt it with his hand to test it, so as to form a judgment of it; synonym جَسَّهُ.

لَامَسَهُ is synonymous with لَمَسَهُ, or with مَاسَّهُ.

Er-Rāghib: لَمْسٌ and مَسٌّ both mean perceiving by means of the outside of the outer skin.

Or they are nearly alike. [Generally, like the English words feeling and touching, respectively.]

Or the first is, originally, [the feeling] with the hand in order to know the feel of a thing; or, with the hand, the seeking for [or feeling for] a thing here and there.

مُلَامَسَةٌ is the same as مُمَاسَّةٌ with the hand, and so is لَمْسٌ.

Or a distinction is to be made between them: لَمْسٌ is sometimes the feeling, or touching, of a thing with a thing, and is sometimes the knowledge of a thing, though there be no touching of substance upon substance; whereas ملامسة is mostly mutual feeling or touching, the act of two.

Compare sense 1.1 above for the proper meaning.

O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say,- nor in a state of ceremonial impurity (Except when travelling on the road), until after washing your whole body. If ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands.
