Core sense — he got her with young; he fecundated the palm-tree; the wind impregnated the cloudgenerated

4.1

Maṣdar إِلْقَاحٌ and لقّحها [maṣdar تَلْقِيحٌ].

The stallion camel made the she-camel conceive; he impregnated her, he got her with young.

4.1.1figurative · مجازhe fecundated the palm-treeالقح النَّخْلَةَ

[and quasi-; see also below].

he fecundated the palm-treeلقّحها

Maṣdar تَلْقِيحٌ.

he fecundated the palm-treeلَقَحَهَا

.

This is done with the لَقَاح, the spadix of the male tree, which is bruised and sprinkled upon the spadix of the female; or by inserting a stalk of a raceme of the male tree into the spathe of the female, after shaking off the pollen of the former upon the spadix of the female, for such is the general practice.

The manner is this: you leave the spathe of the female palm-tree two or three nights after it has burst open; then you take a stalk of a raceme of the male tree, which is best if old, of the preceding year, and insert it into the spadix, after shaking off the pollen as mentioned above; and this you do according to a certain measure.

It should be done only by a man who knows how to proceed in this case. If he is ignorant and does too much, he turns the spathe and spoils it; if he does too little, many of the dates produced will be without stones; and if he does not do it at all to the palm-tree, he will get no advantage from its spadix that year.

لَقَحٌ is the name of what is taken from the male palm-tree to be inserted in the other, namely the spathe of the female. [See also لَقَاحٌ. In the CK, for إِسْمُ مَا أُخِذَ الخ we find اسم ماءٍ اخذ الخ, giving a different and false meaning.]

Core sense — semen; impregnation, getting with younggenerated

1figurative · مجاز

The semen of a stallion camel, of a horse, and of a man.

I'Ab was asked about a man who had two wives, one of whom suckled a boy and the other a girl, neither of them his own children, whether the boy might marry the girl. He answered: “No; because the لقاح [that is, لِقَاح or لَقَاح, as shown below] is one.”

Lth: he meant that the semen which impregnated both women, and which was the source of the milk of both, was one, so that the two sucklings had become as though they were the children of the two women's husband.

But Az says that لقاح may here be a quasi-maṣdar, synonymous with إِلْقَاحٌ, like عَطَآءٌ and إِعْطَآءٌ and the like.

لَقَاحٌ and لِقَاحٌ, with fatḥ and with kasr, are nouns from أَلْقَحَ, synonymous with إِلْقَاحٌ, meaning impregnation, or getting with young; and so in the answer of I'Ab mentioned above.

Afterwards, when her pregnancy has become clearly apparent, she is termed خَلِفَةٌ.

Plural of the first, لَوَاقِحُ and لُقَّحٌ; of the second, لُقُحٌ. In the CK لُقَّحٌ.

1.1figurative · مجازpregnant windsرِيَاحٌ لَوَاقِحُ

So called because they bear the water and the clouds, and turn the clouds over and about, and then make them send down rain; or because they become pregnant, and then impregnate the clouds.

The singular is رِيحٌ لَاقِحٌ, the opposite of which is termed رِيحٌ عَقِيمٌ [or “a barren wind”].

Or ريح لاقح means ذَاتُ لَقَلَاحٍ [possessing that which impregnates], like as دِرْهَمٌ وَازِنٌ means ذُو وَزْنِ, رَجُلٌ رَامِحٌ, ذُو رُمْحٍ.

Or رياح لواقح means impregnating, or fecundating, winds, as does مَلَاقِحُ [plural of مُلْقِحَةٌ].

Or it is not allowable to say مَلَاقِحُ, though this is the regular form of the word, because the wind impregnates the clouds; and so لواقح is irregular.

Or, as some say, the proper original word is مُلْقِحَةٌ; but the winds do not impregnate unless they are themselves pregnant, as though they were pregnant with good and, when they raised the clouds, passed that good on to them.
