Form 1لَبِثَ3 senses · 1 main
muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarلَبْثٌ

Core sense — he tarried, he stayed, he waitedgenerated

1.1he tarried, remained, stayed, or paused, in a placeتلبّث بِمَكَانٍ

which is contrary to analogy, since by rule the maṣdar of an intransitive verb of the measure فَعِلَ is of the measure فَعَلٌ. Other maṣdars are لَبَيثٌ (which agrees with analogy, and occurs in a verse of Jereer), لَبَاثٌ, and لُبْثٌ (the first form given by ISd, and the most common), and لُبَاثٌ, لَبَاثَةٌ, and لَبِيثَةٌ, which are all contrary to analogy, and لُبْثَانٌ [this last, also contrary to analogy, is said to be like سحبان, but I suppose that to be a mistake for سُبْحَان]; or لُبْثٌ and لَبَاثٌ are nouns. The verb means: he tarried; he paused; he tarried and waited, or expected; he was patient, and tarried and waited.

he waited, or pausedتلبّث

تَوَقَّفَ is given as the synonym.

1.1.1he did not delay, or was not slow, to do such and such thingsمالَبِثَ أَنْ فَعَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا
1.1.2wait for such a one, and leave himاِلْبَثْ عَنْ فُلَانٍ

That is, until your doing so shows up the error of his judgement or opinion.
