Also كوّرها, maṣdar تَكْوِيرٌ; or this last is intensive [meaning, it seems, he wound it round many times, or in many folds, on his head]; and hence the phrase that follows.

In the Qur'ān 81:1.

Or: shall be wrapped up and effaced; or wrapped up and have its light taken away; or have its light collected together and wrapped up as a turban is wrapped; or be folded up as a سِجِلّ [or scroll] is folded up; or lose its light (Fr, Katádeh); or be divested of its light ('Ikrimeh); or be blinded, عَوِّرَتْ (I'Ab); or pass away and come to nothing; or be collected together and cast down into the depth below, دُهْوِرَتْ (both of these last explanations are given by Mujáhid); or be cast away (Er-Rabeea Ibn-Kheythem).

Qur'ān 39:7.

Or: He adds of the night to the day; or He makes the night overtake the day; or He brings in the night upon the day: from كَوَّرَ العِمَامَةَ. All these meanings are nearly alike.

A camel's [saddle of the kind called] رَحْل; also مَكْوَرٌ and مُكْوَرٌّ, the last with damm to the م and teshdeed to the ر. Or a رَحْل with its apparatus.

Many pronounce it كَوْرٌ, but this is a mistake.

Plural (of paucity) أَكْوَارٌ and أَكْوُرٌ; (of multitude) كِيرَانٌ, كُورَانٌ and كُؤُورٌ. ISd says the last is irregular as a plural of a singular like كور, which has an infirm letter.

A blacksmith's fire-place; his مَجْمَرَة, built of clay.

It is also said to mean the skin with which he blows his fire; or that is called كِيرٌ only, an arabicized word.

A province, district, or tract of country; a quarter, or region; صُقْعٌ. A مِخْلَاف [q. v.] of a country, that is, a قَرْيَةٌ [which properly means a town or village] of the قُرًى of El-Yemen.

But مخلاف is generally used in the first of the meanings given here for كورة. It also means a city, or a provincial city; though the first meaning is the most common. See also بَنْدٌ.

Plural كُوَرٌ, as غُرَفٌ is the plural of غُرْفَةٌ.

IDrd says he does not think it Arabic. [Perhaps from the Greek.]
