He buried the property, or treasure, in the earth; he collected the property together and stored it up in secret.

and according to MF also كَنُزَ, but the former is the form commonly in use.

اكتنز المَالَ means the same as كَنَزَهُ.

1.1.1he pressed the thing with his hand or foot, in a receptacle or in the earth—كَنَزَ الشَّىْءَ

Plural of جُلَّة.

This is done by throwing the contents of a bag into the bottom of the جُلَّة and pressing them with the feet until they became compacted, or mixed together in a mass, and then bag after bag until the جلّة was pressed full, when it was sewed up with palm-leaf cord.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْبَارِ وَٱلرُّهْبَانِ لَيَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَٰلَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱلَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ ٱلذَّهَبَ وَٱلْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَهَا فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

O ye who believe! there are indeed many among the priests and anchorites, who in Falsehood devour the substance of men and hinder (them) from the way of Allah. And there are those who bury gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah: announce unto them a most grievous penalty-

9:35
يَوْمَ يُحْمَىٰ عَلَيْهَا فِى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكْوَىٰ بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمْ وَجُنُوبُهُمْ وَظُهُورُهُمْ ۖ هَـٰذَا مَا كَنَزْتُمْ لِأَنفُسِكُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمْ تَكْنِزُونَ

On the Day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of Hell, and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, their flanks, and their backs.- "This is the (treasure) which ye buried for yourselves: taste ye, then, the (treasures) ye buried!"

It (a thing, S, Mgh, Msb,) became collected together, or compacted; and full. (S, Mgh, Msb, K.) اكتنز التَّمْرُ [The dates became closely packed, or pressed together so as to be compact or commixed in a mass: see 1]. (TA; and K in art. وجأ ; &c.) The like is also said of wheat. (TA.) اكتنز اللَّحْمُ The flesh became compact, or hard. (From an explanation of the part. n. in the A; &c.) اكتنز الجِرَابُ The bag became very full. (A.) In the Qur'ān 18:81 it is said to be used in a similar way, meaning not gold or silver but knowledge and books.

[Ho! I will teach you a treasure of the treasures of paradise: there is no power nor strength but in God]—أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ كَنْزًا مِنْ كُنُوزِ الجَنَّةِ لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِٱللّٰهِ

Said in a tradition in the same way; the meaning is that a reward is stored up [in paradise] for the man who says this and describes himself by it, just as a treasure is stored up.

Aboo-'Alee El-Kálee says that it is used in a verse of 'Alkamah, which he does not quote, as a noun meaning fat, and adds that this is the only instance known to him of such a use.

Also, that in which property is kept, or guarded.

[Or rather both words have both meanings.] Plural of the latter, مَكَانِزُ.

فَلَعَلَّكَ تَارِكٌۢ بَعْضَ مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ وَضَآئِقٌۢ بِهِۦ صَدْرُكَ أَن يَقُولُوا۟ لَوْلَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ كَنزٌ أَوْ جَآءَ مَعَهُۥ مَلَكٌ ۚ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ نَذِيرٌ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَكِيلٌ

Perchance thou mayest (feel the inclination) to give up a part of what is revealed unto thee, and thy heart feeleth straitened lest they say, "Why is not a treasure sent down unto him, or why does not an angel come down with him?" But thou art there only to warn! It is Allah that arrangeth all affairs!

18:82
وَأَمَّا ٱلْجِدَارُ فَكَانَ لِغُلَـٰمَيْنِ يَتِيمَيْنِ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ وَكَانَ تَحْتَهُۥ كَنزٌ لَّهُمَا وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَـٰلِحًا فَأَرَادَ رَبُّكَ أَن يَبْلُغَآ أَشُدَّهُمَا وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا كَنزَهُمَا رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ وَمَا فَعَلْتُهُۥ عَنْ أَمْرِى ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَأْوِيلُ مَا لَمْ تَسْطِع عَّلَيْهِ صَبْرًا

"As for the wall, it belonged to two youths, orphans, in the Town; there was, beneath it, a buried treasure, to which they were entitled: their father had been a righteous man: So thy Lord desired that they should attain their age of full strength and get out their treasure - a mercy (and favour) from thy Lord. I did it not of my own accord. Such is the interpretation of (those things) over which thou wast unable to hold patience."

25:8
أَوْ يُلْقَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ كَنزٌ أَوْ تَكُونُ لَهُۥ جَنَّةٌ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهَا ۚ وَقَالَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا رَجُلًا مَّسْحُورًا

"Or (Why) has not a treasure been bestowed on him, or why has he (not) a garden for enjoyment?" The wicked say: "Ye follow none other than a man bewitched."

26:58
وَكُنُوزٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ

Treasures, and every kind of honourable position;

28:76
إِنَّ قَـٰرُونَ كَانَ مِن قَوْمِ مُوسَىٰ فَبَغَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلْكُنُوزِ مَآ إِنَّ مَفَاتِحَهُۥ لَتَنُوٓأُ بِٱلْعُصْبَةِ أُو۟لِى ٱلْقُوَّةِ إِذْ قَالَ لَهُۥ قَوْمُهُۥ لَا تَفْرَحْ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْفَرِحِينَ

Qarun was doubtless, of the people of Moses; but he acted insolently towards them: such were the treasures We had bestowed on him that their very keys would have been a burden to a body of strong men, behold, his people said to him: "Exult not, for Allah loveth not those who exult (in riches).

Treasure; property buried (S, A, Mgh, Msb, K) in the earth: (TA:) an inf. n. used as a subst.: pl. كُنُوزٌ . (Mgh, Msb.) Hence, (TA,) it is applied in a trad. to Any property whereof the portion that should be given in alms is not given. (S, TA.) Property that is preserved in a receptacle. (TA.) Anything abundant, collected together, that is desired with emulation. (Sh, TA.) Gold: and silver. (K.) It is said in a trad., أُعْطِيتُ الكَنْزَيْنِ مِنَ الأَحْمَرِ وَالأَبْيَضِ I have been given gold and silver. (TA.) [A treasure of knowledge or science].
