Here كِلَآءٌ may be a maṣdar; or it may be the plural of كِلَأءَةٌ; or it may stand for كِلَآءَةٌ, the ة being dropped by a poetic licence that the metre requires. Abu-l-Hasan.

The verb is also used without hemzeh: كَلَاتُ يَكْلُوكُمْ and كَلَيْتُ يَكْلَاكُمْ, in the dialect of Kureysh; maṣdar كِلَايَةٌ.

As the ism mafʿūl of both, مَكْلُوٌّ is more commonly used than مَكْلِىٌّ, which is correctly used as the ism mafʿūl of كَلَيْتُ.

Form 5تكلّأ1 sense
maṣdarتَكْلِىْءٌ

Core sense — he bought on credit; he asked for a delay in paying a debtgenerated

5.1he bought on creditكلّأ

.

This is the explanation given in the TK, and it appears to be correct. It is also said there that تَكَلَّأْتُهُ means أَخَذْتُهُ نَسْيْئَةً, I took it, or bought it, on credit; and كَلَّأْتُ فِى الطَّعَامِ اخذته بالنّسيئةِ, I took, or bought, the food on credit — though I translate this last differently. (See Form 2, above.)

In the K we read الكَالِئُ والكُلْأَةُ بِالضَّمِّ النَّسِيْئَةُ والعُرْبُونُ وتَكَلَّأْتُ وكَلَّأْتُ تَكْلِيْئًا أخَذْتُهُ. IbrD thinks the last word should be أخَّرْتُ, “I postponed, or delayed”; but I think it should rather be أَخَذْتُهَا, meaning أَخَذْتُ نَسِيْئَةً, I took, or bought, on credit.

In the TA we read that AO says تَكَلَّأْتُ كُلْأَةً وكَلَّأْتُ تَكْلِيْئًا إِسْتَنْسَأْتُ نَسِيْئَةَ أَىْ أَخَذْتُهُ وَالنَّسِيْئَةُ التَّأْخِيرُ وَكَذٰلِكَ إِسْتَكْلَأْتُ كُلْأَةً, but the words اى اخذته seem to have been added by SM; for in the S we find, on the authority of AO, تَكَلَّأْتُ أَىْ ٱسْسَنْسَأْتُ نَسِيْئَةً وَكَذٰلِكَ ٱسْتَكْلَأْتُ كُلْأَةً بِالضَّمِّ وَهُوَ مِنَ التَّأْخِيرِ. From this it seems that تكلّأ and الستكلأ كُلأَةً mean: he asked for a delay of the time of payment of a debt.

See Form 8.

1

This and كُلْأَةٌ: the same as نَسِيْئَةٌ.

It apparently bears both of the two meanings that follow, and is clearly shown in the S and elsewhere to bear the latter of them: a postponement, or delay, in the time of the payment of a debt, and the like.

See also نُسْأَةٌ and كَلَأَ.

Both words also mean, like نَسِيْئَةٌ: a debt whose payment a creditor has deferred to a future time.

What is forbidden by this is a man's buying a thing on credit for a certain period and then, when the time of payment comes and he finds nothing with which to pay the debt, saying, Sell it to me on credit for a further period, for something additional — whereupon the other sells it to him. Or: a man's paying money for wheat or the like, to be delivered at a certain period, and then, when the period comes, the debtor's saying, I have no wheat, and so on; but sell it to me on credit for a certain period. See أَجَلٌ.
