muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarكُفْرَانٌ كُفُرٌ إِيْمَانٌ كَفْرٌ

Core sense — he covered, or concealed, it; he was ungrateful; he disbelievedgenerated

1.1he veiled, concealed, hid, or covered the thingكفّرهُ

In the sense first explained below the muḍāriʿ is كَفِرَ. Fei observes: El-Fárábee, whom J follows, says it is like يَضْرِبُ, but in a trustworthy copy of the T it is written كَفُرَ, and this is the proper form, because they say that كَفَرَ النِّعْمَةَ [of which the muḍāriʿ is كَفُرَ] is borrowed from كَفَرَ الشَّىْءَ in the sense first explained below. MF says that J, following his maternal uncle Aboo-Nasr El-Fárábee, is doubtless mistaken in saying that the muḍāriʿ of this verb is كَفِرَ. SM replies that it is correctly كَفِرَ, as J and F and other leading lexicologists have said, though the muḍāriʿ of the verb of كُفْرٌ as meaning the opposite of إِيْمَانٌ is كَفُرَ. [Or, if this second verb is taken from the first, the muḍāriʿ of the first may have been originally كَفِرَ and كَفُرَ, and general usage may afterwards have applied the muḍāriʿ كَفِرَ to one meaning, while the has been applied by very few people to that meaning, but by all to the meanings derived from it.] The maṣdars are كَفْرٌ and تَكْفِيرٌ.

he covered it; he covered it overكَفَرَ عَلَيْهِ
he covered the sown seed with earthكَفَرَ البَذْرَ ٱلْمَبْذُورَ
the clouds covered the skyكَفَرَ السَّحَابُ السَّمَآءَ
the night covered it with its blacknessكَفَرَهُ اللَّيْلُ

Or: he covered the thing so as to destroy it.

Lebeed says: In a night in which the clouds that covered the sky concealed the stars.

shāhid
فِى لَيْلَةٍ كَفَرَ النُّجُومَ غَمَامُهَا

Also said as كَفَرَ عَلَيْهِ.

the wind covered the trace or mark [with dust]كَفَرَتِ الرِّيحُ الرَّسْمَ
he clad himself with a garment over his coat of mailكَفَرَ فَوْقَ دِرْعِهِ
he covered his coat of mail with a garmentكَفَّرَ دِرْعَهُ بِثَوْبٍ
he put his goods in a receptacleكَفَرَ مَتَاعَهُ
he covered, or concealed, the goods in the receptacleكَفَرَ ٱلْمَتَاعَ فِى الوِعَآءِ

So in the Kur 3:96, [thus, with damm as the vowel of the muḍāriʿ.]

1.1.1he covered up and denied the favour conferred on him; he was ungratefulكَفَرَ

Also constructed as كَفَرَ النِّعْمَةَ, بِالنِّعْمَةِ, كَفَرَ نِعْمَةَ ٱللّٰهِ, and بِنِعْمَةِ ٱللّٰهِ.

the most common form in this case, (El-Basáïr,) and also كُفُورٌ and كُفْرٌ. (El-Basáïr.)

The opposite of شَكَرَ. Also: he denied, or disacknowledged, and concealed the favour or benefit of God. God's favours are the signs that show those who have discrimination that their Creator is one, without partner, and that He has sent apostles with miraculous signs, revealed scriptures, and clear proofs.

and we will not deny your favour, nor be ungrateful for itوَلَا نَكْفُرُكَ

In the prayer termed القُنُوتُ; that is, وَلَا نَكْفُرُ نِعْمَتَكَ.

[The verb in this sense seems, from what has been said above, to be a حَقِيقَة عُرْفِيَّة, a word so much used in a particular figurative sense that in that sense it is conventionally regarded as proper.]

1.1.2he denied, or disacknowledgedكَفَرَ

used [absolutely] in this sense.

[See the ism fāʿil below; and see Form 3. See also the article ف, page 2322 a.]

he denied the Creatorكَفَرَ بِالصَّانِعِ
1.1.3he disbelieved; he became an unbeliever, or an infidelكَفَرَ

the most common form in this case, (El-Basáïr,) and also كَفْرٌ, كُفْرَانٌ, and كُفُورٌ. The opposite of آمَنَ.

he disbelieved in Godكَفَرَ بِٱللّٰهِ
whoever declares the opponents of the Benoo-Marwán unbelievers and goes out against them, let him go his wayمَنْ أَقَرَّ بِالكُفْرِ فَخَلِّ سَبِيلَهُ

Because one who does so conceals the truth and the favours of the liberal Dispenser of favours [who is God]. [Also, as shown above, He denied God.]

Related in a tradition of 'Abd-El-Melik, who wrote this to El-Hajjáj.

1.1.4

[He blasphemed: a meaning very common in the present day.]

1.1.5he declared himself to be clear, or quit, of such a thingكَفَرَ بِكَذَا

Used in this sense in the Kur 14:27.

Qur’ān 14:24 approximate — somewhere between 14:13 and 14:25 Lane cites “Kur xiv. 27”
1.1.6he was remiss, or fell short of his duty, with respect to the lawكَفَرَ

And he neglected the gratitude to God which was due from him. So in the Kur 30:43, as is shown by its being opposed to عَمِلَ صَالِحًا.

Lane cites “Kur xxx. 43” — Flügel numbering, not yet mapped

[The verb when used in this sense, seems, from what has been said above, to be a حَقِيقَة عُرْفِيَّة , or word so much used in a particular tropical sense as to be, in that sense, conventionally regarded as proper.] And hence, كَفَرَ , inf. n. كُفْرَانٌ , is used to signify [absolutely] He denied, or disacknowledged. And كَفَرَ also signifies He was remiss, or fell short of his duty, with respect to the law, and neglected the gratitude or thankfulness to God which was incumbent on him. So in the Kur xxx. 43; as is shown by its being opposed to عَمِلَ صَالِحًا . (TA.) كَفَرَ لَهُ , inf. n. كَفْرٌ : see 2.

Core sense — ingratitude, denial of God's favours; disbelief, unbelief; tar, or pitchgenerated

1

See Form 1. As a simple noun: ingratitude, and the like.

1.1

And particularly denial, or disacknowledgment, of favours or benefits, especially of those conferred by God; and disbelief, unbelief, infidelity.

It is of four kinds: كُفْرُ إِنْكَارٍ, the denial of God with the heart and the tongue, having no knowledge of what one is told of the unity of God [and the like]; كُفْرُ جُحُودٍ, acknowledgment with the heart without confessing with the tongue, [or the disacknowledgment of God with the tongue while the heart acknowledges Him;] كُفْرُ المُعَانَدَةِ, the knowledge of God with the heart and confession with the tongue, with refusal to accept [the truth]; and كُفْرُ النِّفَاقِ, confession with the tongue with disbelief in the heart. All of these are unpardonable.

The greatest كُفْر is the denial of the unity [of God], or of the prophetic office [of Mohammad and others], or of the law of God. (El-Basáïr.)

[Also blasphemy. Its plural, as a simple noun in all these senses, is said to be كُفُورٌ.]

Akh says that كُفُورًا [in the accusative case] in the Kur 17:101 — to which may be added 17:91 and 25:52 — is the plural of كُفْرٌ, just as بُرُودٌ is the plural of بُرْدٌ.

See they not that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, has power to create the like of them (anew)? Only He has decreed a term appointed, of which there is no doubt. But the unjust refuse (to receive it) except with ingratitude.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

2

Tar, or pitch, synonymous with قِيرٌ, with which ships are smeared; there are three sorts, كُفْرٌ, قِيرٌ, and زِفتٌ.

كفر is melted, and then ships are smeared with it; [apparently the source of its name, from its being a covering.] زفت is used for smearing skins for wine and the like.

Said by Mohammad during the pilgrimage of valediction; “after me” means after my death, and the saying continues, “one party of you smiting the necks of others.” As though he meant by this to forbid war. Or: do not become unbelievers after me; that is, do not call people unbelievers, and so become unbelievers yourselves.

2

One who denies, or disacknowledges, the favours or benefits of God; ungrateful, unthankful, especially to God.

One who denies the unity [of God], the prophetic office [of Mohammad and others], and the law of God altogether, according to the common conventional acceptance: a disbeliever, an unbeliever, an infidel, a miscreant; the opposite of مُؤْمِنٌ. (El-Basáïr.)

So called because he conceals the favours of God; or because his heart is covered, as though the word were of the measure فَاعِلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ; or because كُفْر covers his heart altogether, that is, he has a covering over his heart; or because, when God invites him to acknowledge His unity, He invites him to accept His favours, and when he refuses, he covers the favour of God, shutting it out from himself.

Feminine with ة. Masculine plurals كَفَرَةٌ, the most common plural of كافر in the first of the senses explained above, (El-Basáïr,) and كُفَّارٌ, the most common plural of the same word in the last of those senses, as the opposite of مؤمن, (El-Basáïr,) and كِفَارٌ and كَافِرُونَ; feminine plurals كَوَافِرُ and كَافِرَاتٌ.

رَجُلٌ كَفَّارٌ and كَفُورٌ mean the same as كَافِرٌ; or كَفُورٌ is an intensive adjective, meaning very ungrateful, or unthankful, especially to God: so in the Kur 22:65 and 43:14.

كَفَّارٌ is more intensive than كَفُورٌ, meaning habitually ungrateful and the like: so in the Kur ا 23; but sometimes it is used in the sense of كَفُورٌ, as in the Kur 14:37. (El-Basáïr.)

كَفُورٌ is feminine as well as masculine; its plural is كُفُرٌ, also both masculine and feminine; and it has no unbroken plural.

One who denies, or disacknowledges, the favours or benefits of God: (K:) [ungrateful; unthankful; especially to God:] one who denies, or disacknowledges, the unity [of God], and the prophetic office [of Mohammad and others], and the law of God, altogether, accord. to the common conventional acceptation: a disbeliever; an unbeliever; an infidel; a miscreant; contr. of مُؤْمِنٌ : (El- Basáïr:) because he conceals the favours of God: (S:) or because his heart is covered; as though it were of the measure فَاعِلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ : (IDrd, TA:) or because كُفْر covers his heart altogether: (Lth, TA:) i. e. having a covering to his heart: or because, when God invites him to acknowledge his unity, He invites him to accept his favours; and when he refuses to do so, he covers the favour of God, excluding it from him: (Az, TA:) fem. with ة : (S, Msb, K:) pl. masc. كَفَرَةٌ , (S, Msb, K,) the most common pl. of كافر in the first of the senses explained above, (El-Basáïr,) and كُفَّارٌ , (S, Msb, K,) the most common pl. of the same in the last of those senses, as contr. of مؤمن , (El-Basáïr,) and كِفَارٌ (S, K) and كَافِرُونَ : (Msb:) and pl. fem. كَوَافِرُ (S, Msb, K) and كَافِرَاتٌ : (Msb:) and رَجُلٌ كَفَّارٌ , and كَفُورٌ signify the same as كَافِرٌ : (K:) or كَفُورٌ is an intensive epithet, meaning very ungrateful, or unthankful, [&c., especially to God]: so in the Kur xxii. 65, and xliii. 14: and كَفَّارٌ has a more intensive signification than كَفُورٌ , [meaning habitually ungrateful, &c.:] os in the Kur ا 23: but sometimes it is used in the sense of كَفُورٌ ; as in the Kur xiv. 37: (ElBasáïr:) كَفُورٌ is fem. as well as masc.; (TA;) and its pl. is كُفُرٌ , (K, * TA,) also both masc. and fem.; and it has no unbroken pl. (TA.) Also, simply, Denying, or disacknowledging; a denier, or disacknowledger: followed by بِ before the thing denied: pl. كَافِرُونَ : (S, TA;) so in the Kur ii. 38, (TA,) and xxviii. 48. (S, TA.) Core sense — the spathe of a palm-tree's spadix; camphor; a fountain in paradisegenerated

1

The spathe, or envelope, of the طَلْع [or spadix] of a palm-tree, or its upper covering; the كِمّ of a palm-tree.

Also كُفَرَّى, with damm to the ك, fet-h to the ف, and teshdeed to the ر; or كُفُرَّى [so in the copies of the K, and I have found it written so in other works, so that both forms appear to be correct]; and كَفَرَّى, كِفِرَّى, كَافِرٌ, and كَفَرٌ. So called because it conceals what is within it.

Or, according to AA and Fr, the طَلْع [by which they probably mean the spathe, for, as is said in the Mgh, it is applied by some to the كِمّ (or spathe) before it bursts open].

كفرّى is sometimes masculine, though more properly and commonly feminine.

IAar says: I heard Umm-Rabáh say هٰذِهِ كفرّى and هٰذَا كفّرى. The plural of كَافُورٌ is كَوَافِيرُ, and the plural of كَافِرٌ is كَوَافِرُ.

1.1figurative · مجاز

Also the زَمَع of the grape-vine, that is, the leaves which cover what is within them of the raceme, likened to the كافور of the طلع; the كِمّ [or calyx] of the grapes before the blossom comes forth, because they cover the unopened raceme.

According to IF, also كُفَرَّى, plural كَوَافِيرُ and كَوَافِرُ according to the K; but it is well known that the first is the plural of كافور and the second of كافر.

1.2figurative · مجاز — inferred

And, according to some, the envelope [or calyx] of any plant.

2

[Camphor;] a well-known kind of perfume, from certain trees [the laurus camphora of Linn.] in the mountains of the sea of India and China, which give shade to many people or creatures, being great and having many spreading branches, which leopards or panthers frequent, and the wood of which is white and easily broken.

The كافور is found inside it, and is of various kinds, red in colour, and becoming white only by تَصْعِيد [or sublimation].

3

According to the M, a mixture of perfume made with the spathe of the spadix of the palm-tree.

4the pious shall drink a cup of wine whose mixture is Káfoorإِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ يَشْرَبُونَ مِنْ كَأْسٍ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًا

A certain spring, or fountain, in paradise.

So in the Kur 76:5.

IDrd says that it should be imperfectly declined, because it is a feminine [proper] name, determinate, of more than three letters, but that it is made perfectly declined for the conformity of the ends of the verses.

Th says that it is made perfectly declined because it is used by way of comparison, and that if it were a proper name of the spring it would be imperfectly declined. ISd says Th means: whose mixture is like كافور [or camphor].

Zj says that it may mean that the taste of perfume and كافور is in it, or that it is mixed with كافور.

5

A certain plant [which I believe to be the same as the camphorata Monspeliensis; see my “Thousand and One Nights,” chapter 28, note 6] of sweet odour, the flower of which is white, like the flower of the أُقْحُوَان [or camomile].

6

IDrd says: I do not think كافور is Arabic, because they sometimes say قَفُورٌ and قَافُورٌ.

Qur’ānic occurrences كَافُور
