4.2he divided the camels into two equal numbers, one half to breed one year and the other half the nextاكفأ الإِبِلَ كَفْأَتَيْنِ

The Arabs held it best to leave a she-camel for a year after she had bred, without letting the stallion cover her, in the same way as land is left fallow for a year.

The same is also said of sheep and the like.

4.3he assigned to him the profits, or a year's profits, of his camels and his sheep or goatsاكفأه إِبِلَهُ وَغَنَمَهُ

Or he impaired the end of a verse in any way. Eloquent Arabs explained the verb to Akh in this last way, without defining any particular kind of impairment, but one of them made it consist in the use of different letters.

. This is according to a commentary on the Káfee; for example, ط with د. Such is the meaning of the verb in general use today.

Or, according to the Ahkám el-Asás, he changed the روىّ from ر to ل, or ل to م, or made a similar change of one letter to another whose place of utterance is near it.

Or it has another meaning, given below, on the same authority.

Or he used different letters in the rhymes, whether their places of utterance are near each other or not: in some م, in some ن, in some د, in some ط, in some ح, and in some خ, and so on; so says AZ, and this is the meaning known to the Arabs.

Or he used different vowels in the روىّ; or it means the same as أَقْوَى; or, according to the Ahkám el-Asás, either as explained above on that authority, or he used different final inflections in the rhymes.

Or he changed the final vowel in the rhyme, ending one verse with ضَمَّة and another with كَسْرَة, the two vowels that resemble each other; see a verse cited in the first paragraph of غيب.
