— it seems to be implied in one place in the K that the muḍāriʿ is كَعَبَ, but this is not so; maṣdar كُعُوبٌ and كِعَابَةٌ (written كَعَابَةٌ by MF) and كُعُوبَةٌ and كعّب, and also maṣdar تَكْعِيبٌ.

The girl's breast swelled, became prominent, and round; or began to swell: see كَاعِبٌ. Or the term تَفْلِيكٌ is used, then نُهُودٌ, then تَكْعِيبٌ, for the successive stages of the breast's growth.

Also, and more commonly, the ankle-bone, or talus: in a man, what projects above the tarsus, where the foot is set on; the bone that projects at the junction of the shank and the foot.

Each foot has two bones so termed, one on the right and one on the left — each of the two bones that project on either side of the foot; or the ankle-joint, or tarsal-joint, the joint between the shank and the foot.

As rejected the common people's saying that it is in the upper part of the foot. Some say it is each of the two bones in the upper part of the foot; so say the Sheeʿah. In the same way Yahyà Ibn-El-Hárith speaks of the كِعَاب as in the middle of the foot.

Plural, of the smaller number, أَكْعُبٌ; of the larger number, كُعُوبٌ and كِعَابٌ.

Also used of any quadruped: in a horse, what is between each وَظِيف and سَاق, or between the bone of the وظيف and the bone of the ساق, which projects backwards.

By this is meant not the fetlock-joint, or hind fetlock-joint, but the hock: as has been shown under عُرْقُوب, the term كَعْب, with reference to quadrupeds, is sometimes applied to what anatomists call the tarsus.

The superior bone of the tarsus, called by anatomists astragalus or os tali: a little bone, somewhat oblong, taken from the foot of a sheep or the like, and thrown in play like a die.

The die used in the game of tables, or backgammon; any die used in play.

Plural of the former word: كِعَابٌ and كُعْبٌ and كَعَبَاتٌ; the last so written according to the TA, but in the CK كَعْبَاتٌ.

Playing with the كعب is forbidden (Kur 5:92).

رَأَيْتُ الشَّعْبَ مِنْ كَعْبٍ وَكَانُوامِنَ الشَّنَْآنِ قَدْ صَارُوا كِعَابَا

the poet means that they were divided and opposed in mind or opinion, so that each group that was of one mind became a party by itself.

He seems to compare them to play-bones thrown on the ground; or to the several joints, or knots, of a reed or cane; or to a spear whose cane-shaft is not uniform in its joints.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَقْتُلُوا۟ ٱلصَّيْدَ وَأَنتُمْ حُرُمٌ ۚ وَمَن قَتَلَهُۥ مِنكُم مُّتَعَمِّدًا فَجَزَآءٌ مِّثْلُ مَا قَتَلَ مِنَ ٱلنَّعَمِ يَحْكُمُ بِهِۦ ذَوَا عَدْلٍ مِّنكُمْ هَدْيًۢا بَـٰلِغَ ٱلْكَعْبَةِ أَوْ كَفَّـٰرَةٌ طَعَامُ مَسَـٰكِينَ أَوْ عَدْلُ ذَٰلِكَ صِيَامًا لِّيَذُوقَ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهِۦ ۗ عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَمَّا سَلَفَ ۚ وَمَنْ عَادَ فَيَنتَقِمُ ٱللَّهُ مِنْهُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ ذُو ٱنتِقَامٍ

O ye who believe! Kill not game while in the sacred precincts or in pilgrim garb. If any of you doth so intentionally, the compensation is an offering, brought to the Ka'ba, of a domestic animal equivalent to the one he killed, as adjudged by two just men among you; or by way of atonement, the feeding of the indigent; or its equivalent in fasts: that he may taste of the penalty of his deed. Allah forgives what is past: for repetition Allah will exact from him the penalty. For Allah is Exalted, and Lord of Retribution.

جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْكَعْبَةَ ٱلْبَيْتَ ٱلْحَرَامَ قِيَـٰمًا لِّلنَّاسِ وَٱلشَّهْرَ ٱلْحَرَامَ وَٱلْهَدْىَ وَٱلْقَلَـٰٓئِدَ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِتَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

Allah made the Ka'ba, the Sacred House, an asylum of security for men, as also the Sacred Months, the animals for offerings, and the garlands that mark them: That ye may know that Allah hath knowledge of what is in the heavens and on earth and that Allah is well acquainted with all things.
