The word is قُتَلَ according to some copies of the K; other copies have قَتَلَ, so that the meaning is: he slew.

In this sense أَكْرَبَ is said of a man, but rarely; and of a horse, or other animal that runs.

He picked the dates called كُرَابَة from among the roots of the branches [after the racemes of fruit had been cut off].

He became afflicted, distressed, or oppressed, by sorrow, grief, and the like, or by an affair.

[Literally] that takes away the breath, which agrees with present usage; see بَهْرٌ, last sentence. Or the soul (so, wrongly, according to some copies of the K). Or anxiety, worry, or disquiet of mind. [Or grief, or anxiety, that presses heavily upon the heart.] Or both signify anxiety, grief, or intense grief.

The plural of the first is كُرُوبٌ, and of the second كُرَبٌ.

The rope that is tied to the bucket after the مَنِين, which is the first, or main, rope, so that it remains if the منين breaks.

Or the rope that is tied to the middle of the cross-bars of the bucket, and is then doubled, and then trebled, so as to be the part next the water, in order that the great rope may not rot.

But a marginal note in a copy of the S says that this last explanation properly applies to the دَرَك, not to the كرب.

Plural أَكْرَابٌ.

A collective generic noun.

Or the stumps of the branches — what remains on the palm-tree of the lower parts, or ends, of the branches after the lopping, like steps.

Hence the proverb: [When was the wisdom of God in the stumps, or lower ends, of palm-branches?]

Said by Jereer in reply to Es-Salatán El-'Abdee, who had pronounced El-Ferezdak superior to Jereer in lineage, and Jereer superior to El-Ferezdak as a poet.

IB denies that it is a proverb, but IM argues against him that it is. [The meaning is: when was God's wisdom in husbandmen and owners of palm-trees? — for the region of Es-Salatán's tribe abounded in palm-trees. The words are applied to a man who challenges another to a contest for excellence when he is unworthy of the contest. See Freytag, Arab. Prov., 2. 628.]

Singular of كِرَابٌ, which means the channels in which water flows in a valley; or the upper parts of valleys.

Aboo-Dhu-eyb says, describing bees: [The eaters, or feeders, among them resort to the upper parts of the mountains, busily engaged, and pour down into ravines with crooked water-channels]

[جوارس شعوف and مصيف are explained as above; and الهاب is said, in art. لهب, to be here the plural of لِهْبٌ. In a copy of the S this last is wrongly written إِلْهَابًا.]

Yaakoob asserts that the ك in this word is a substitute for the ق in قَرْبَانُ, but ISd denies this.

[Some add “in the oven”, but I doubt whether that addition is right.]

A knot, or joint, of a reed or cane.

According to IAar, the same as شُوبَقٌ, which is the same as فَيْلَكُونٌ.

[شوبق is an arabicised word, from the Persian شُوبَجْ or چُوبَهْ, both of which mean a rolling-pin, and this is the meaning given to شوبق and شوبك today. It should be noted, however, that كَرْنِيب, which is probably a corruption of كَرِيبٌ, is a name often given in Egypt today to a baker's peel.]

In the L, كريب is explained, on the authority of Kr, by سَوِيقٌ, but this is probably a mistake for شوبق.

Dates that are picked from among the roots of the branches after the racemes of fruit have been cut off; the scattered dates that remain at the roots of the branches. AHn, under خُلَالَةٌ, which means the same.

Plural أَكْرِبَةٌ, in the formation of which the augmentative letter (that is, the feminine ة) seems to have been disregarded; for فُعَالَةٌ (this is the right reading; but some copies of the K have فُعَالَى, and others فُعَال) does not form a plural of the measure أَفْعِلَةٌ.

A misfortune, or calamity; or a severe misfortune, or calamity.

Plural كَرَائِبُ.

Also الكَرُّوبِيُّونَ — or this last is a mistake — and الكَرُوبِيَّةُ: [the Hebrew Cherubim,] the chiefs, or princes, of the angels; the archangels, among whom are Jebraeel, Meekáeel and Isráfeel.

They are also called المُقَرَّبُونَ, according to Abu-l-'Áliyeh: the nearest of the angels to the bearers of the throne.

So called from كرب in the sense of “nearness”, or “being near”; or from their firmness, or compactness, of make [see مُكْرَبٌ], because of their strength and their patience in worship; or from كَرَبٌ, “sorrow and the like”, because of their fear and awe of God.

Sh quotes the following of Umeiyeh: [Archangels, among whom are some that bend down the body, and some that prostrate themselves]
