maṣdarقَيْضٌ

Core sense — he clave, or broke asunder, a thing; it became cleft; he likened it to somethinggenerated

1.1he (a young bird) broke open the egg; or he (a bird) broke the egg open from over the young one—قَاضَ البَيْضَةَ

He clave, or broke or rent asunder; muḍāriʿ يَقِيضَ.

[And when it shall be thus, this lowest heaven] shall be rent asunder from over its inhabitants—فَإِذَا كَانَ كَذٰلِكَ قِيضَتْ هٰذِهِ السَّمَآءُ الدُّنُبَا عَنْ أَهْلِهَا

Said in a tradition about the day of resurrection. The inhabitants meant are the inhabitants of the earth, mentioned earlier in the tradition. Or, as Sh says, it shall be dissolved.

1.1.1I cracked the glass bottle, without its parts separating—قِضْتُ

Also said as قَضْتُ.

1.1.2I demolished, destroyed, or threw down, the building—قِضْتُ البِنَآءَ

A dialectal variant of قُضْتُ.

, (A, TA,) [aor, يَقِيضَ ,] inf. n. قَيْضٌ , (K,) He clave, or broke or rent asunder. (A, * K, TA.) You say, قَاضَ البَيْضَةَ He (a young bird) clave, or broke asunder, the egg: and he (a bird) clave, or broke asunder, the egg from over the young one. (Lth, A, * TA.) And it is said in a trad, respecting the day of resurrection, فَإِذَا كَانَ كَذٰلِكَ قِيضَتْ هٰذِهِ السَّمَآءُ الدُّنُبَا عَنْ أَهْلِهَا , i. e., [And when it shall be thus, this lowest heaven] shall be cleft, or rent asunder, from over its inhabitants, meaning the inhabitants of the earth ( الأَرْض ), which is previously mentioned in the trad.:] or, as Sh says, shall be dissolved. Form 2قيّض لَهُ كَذَا1 sense

Core sense — he (God) ordained, or prepared, such a thing for himgenerated

2.1God ordained, or prepared, such a one for such a one; or brought such a one to such a one and prepared him for him—قيّض ٱللّٰهُ فُلَانًا لِفُلَانٍ

He (God) ordained, or appointed, such a thing for him.

In [some of] the copies of the K, بِفُلَانٍ, which is a mistake.

And we have appointed, or prepared, for them associates whence they do not expect—وَقَيَّضْنَا لَهُمْ قُرَنَآءَ

From the Qur'ān 41:24. These associates shall have possession of them as the قَيْض, or shell, has possession of the egg.

We will appoint, or prepare, for him a devil [as an associate]—نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا

Qur'ān 43:35.

A young man has not honoured an aged man for his age but God has appointed for him in his age such as shall honour him—مَا أَكْرَمَ شَابٌّ شَيْخًا لِسِنِّهِ إِلَّا قَيَّضَ ٱللّٰهُ لَهُ عِنْدَ سِنِّهِ مَنْ يَكْرِمُهُ

on this sense According to some, the verb is used only of evil; but this is not so, as the saying of Mohammad shows.

وَمَن يَعْشُ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُۥ شَيْطَـٰنًا فَهُوَ لَهُۥ قَرِينٌ

If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him.

He (God, Msb) ordained, or appointed, for him such a thing. (Mgh, Msb.) And قيّض ٱللّٰهُ فُلَانًا لِفُلَانٍ , (S, A, K,) in [some of] the copies of the K, بِفُلَانٍ , which is a mistake, (TA,) God ordained, or appointed, or prepared, such a one for such a one: (A:) or brought such a one to such a one, and ordained, or appointed, or prepared, him for him. (S, K.) Hence the saying in the Kur, [xli. 24,] (S,) وَقَيَّضْنَا لَهُمْ قُرَنَآءَ (S, K) And we have appointed, or prepared, for them associates (A, * Bd, * K, TA) whence they do not expect, (A, K, TA,) which shall have possession of them like as the قَيْض , or shell, has possession of the egg. (Bd.) And so in the same, [xliii. 35,] نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا We will appoint, or prepare, for him a devil [as an associate]. (Zj.) Accord. to some, the verb is used only as relating to evil; but this is not true, as is shown by the saying of Mohammad, مَا أَكْرَمَ شَابٌّ شَيْخًا لِسِنِّهِ إِلَّا قَيَّضَ ٱللّٰهُ لَهُ عِنْدَ سِنِّهِ مَنْ يَكْرِمُهُ [A young man hath not honoured an aged man for his age but God hath appointed for him in his age such as shall honour him]. Form 3قايضهُ1 sense

maṣdarمُقَايَضَةٌmuḍāriʿيَقِيضُ

He bartered, or exchanged commodities, with him; maṣdar مُقَايَضَةٌ and قِيَاضٌ.

Synonymous with عَارَضَهُ بِمَتَاعٍ, or عَاوَضَهُ, and بَادَلَهُ: he gave him a commodity and took another commodity in its stead.

[If you wish,] I will give you in exchange for it [the choice of the coats of mail of Kheyber]—إِنْ شِئْتَ قَايَضْتُكَ بِهِ المُخْتَارَةَ مِنْ دُروُعِ خَيْبَرَ

I gave him a horse for two horses in exchange—أَعْطَيْتُهُ فَرَسًا بِفَرَسَيْنِ مُقَايَضَةً

I do not give, or take, anyone in exchange for you—مَا أُقَايِضُ بِكَ أَحَدًا

If I were given what would fill the desert of men, in exchange for such a one, I would not accept them—لَوْ أُعْطِيتُ مِلْءَ الدَّهْنَآءِ رِجَالًا قِيَاضًا بِفُلَانٍ رَضِيتُهُمْ

The like of this occurs in a tradition of Muʿáwiyeh, said by him with reference to Yezeed.

, (S, A, K, &c.) inf. n. مُقَايَضَةٌ (S Mgh) and قِيَاضٌ , (A,) He bartered, or exchanged commodities, with him; syn. عَارَضَهُ , (S, O, L, and so in a copy of the K,) بِمَتَاعٍ ; (S;) or عَاوَضَهُ ; (A, and so in some copies of the K; in the CK, عايَضَهُ ;) and بَادَلَهُ ; (A, K;) i. e. he gave him a commodity and took another commodity in its stead: (TA:) [as also قَابَضَهُ , with ب :] and قَاضَهُ , aor. يَقِيضُ , he gave him a thing in exchange.
