Core sense — he knit, or arched, the thing; he collected it together into one aggregategenerated

Q. 1.1[he tied, or knit, the thing; or, in modern usage, he arched, or vaulted, it, and made it firm]—عَقَدَهُ وَأَحْكَمَهُ

It seems to mean he compacted the thing.

Hence what is called a قَنْطَرَة is so called because it is firmly knit together, or arched, or vaulted, لِإِحْكَامِ عَقْدِهَا.

i. q. عَقَدَهُ وَأَحْكَمَهُ [He tied, or knit, the thing; or, agreeably with modern usage, he arched, or vaulted, it; and made it firm, or strong]. (Zj.) Hence what is called a قَنْطَرَة is thus called because of its being firmly, or strongly, knit together, or arched, or vaulted, لِإِحْكَامِ عَقْدِهَا . (MF.) A bridge: what is built over water, for crossing over on it; an أَزَج [or oblong arched or vaulted structure], built with baked bricks or with stones, over water, on which to cross over.

Or it is the same as جِسْرٌ; or that word is more common, since it applies both to what is built and to what is not built.

Also a lofty structure. Plural قَنَاطِرُ. See Form 1.

A certain مِعْيَار [or standard of weight or measure]. Or, according to some, a quantity of no fixed weight; or a large unknown quantity, or aggregate, of property; or much property heaped up.

Or four thousand deenárs: this is what most of the Arabs hold to be the truth. Or four thousand dirhems.

A 'Obeyd, on the authority of Mo'ádh Ibn-Jebel: one thousand two hundred ookeeyehs.

Or a hundred ritls, which is the same [this is its weight in the present day, that is, a hundredweight, or a hundred pounds].

Es-Suddee: a hundred ritls of gold or of silver.

Or a hundred and twenty ritls; or a thousand ookeeyehs of gold, or of silver.

Or twelve thousand ookeeyehs, according to Aboo-Hureyreh, on the authority of the Prophet.

Or a hundred ookeeyehs of gold, or of silver.

I 'Ab: a hundred mithkáls, the mithkál being twenty keeráts.

Or forty ookeeyehs of gold; or one thousand two hundred deenárs; or one thousand one hundred deenárs; or seventy thousand deenárs.

Or, in the language of Barbar, a thousand mithkáls of gold or of silver.

I 'Ab: eighty thousand dirhems.

Or a hundred dirhems; or a hundred menns.

Or a quantity of gold, or of silver, enough to fill a bull's hide: so in the Syriac language, according to Es-Suddee.

There are other definitions of the word as well. Plural قَنَاطِيرُ.
