Form 1قَنَطَ2 senses
muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُ

Core sense — he despaired of the mercy of God; he withheld his watergenerated

1.1he despaired of the mercy of Godمِنْ

. Other forms of the verb: قَنَطَ; قَنِطَ; قَنُطَ; قَنَطَ; قَنِطَ. Each of the last two mixes two dialects.

Maṣdar قُنُوطٌ, which belongs to the first and second, and also to the fourth and sixth, though this is doubtful; قَنَطٌ, which belongs to the third; and قَنَاطَةٌ, which belongs to the third also, or, more probably by analogy, to the fourth.

Or he despaired of good; or, as some say, he despaired most violently of a thing.

In the Qur'ān 15:56, according to different readings, وَمَنْ يَقْنِطُ مِنْ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّهِ إِلَّا الضَّالُّونَ, يَقْنُطُ, and يَقْنَطُ [And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those who are in error?]

1.2he withheld, or kept back, his water from usقَنَطَ مَآءَهُ عَنَّا

قَنْطٌ is also synonymous with مَنْعٌ.

He said: "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord, but such as go astray?"

42:28
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُنَزِّلُ ٱلْغَيْثَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا قَنَطُوا۟ وَيَنشُرُ رَحْمَتَهُۥ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْوَلِىُّ ٱلْحَمِيدُ

He is the One that sends down rain (even) after (men) have given up all hope, and scatters His Mercy (far and wide). And He is the Protector, Worthy of all Praise.

It is said in the Kur, [xv. 56,] accord. to different readings, وَمَنْ يَقْنِطُ مِنْ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّهِ إِلَّا الضَّالُّونَ and يَقْنُطُ (Bd, TA) and يَقْنَطُ (Bd) [And who despaireth of the mercy of his Lord except those who are in error?] قَنْطٌ is also syn. with مَنْعٌ . (K.) You say, قَنَطَ مَآءَهُ عَنَّا He withheld, kept, or debarred, his water from us. (Sgh on the authority of Ibn-'Abbád.)

2.1the worst of men are those who make men despair of the mercy of Godشَرُّ النَّاسِ الَّذِينَ يُقَنِّطُونَ النَّاسَ مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللّٰهِ

he made him despair; also in form 4, اقنطهُ.

لَّا يَسْـَٔمُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مِن دُعَآءِ ٱلْخَيْرِ وَإِن مَّسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ فَيَـُٔوسٌ قَنُوطٌ

Man does not weary of asking for good (things), but if ill touches him, he gives up all hope (and) is lost in despair.

The plural of the first is formed with ون (Qur'ān 15:55, according to the prevailing reading), and so is the plural of the second.
