Maṣdar قِمَارٌ and مُقَامَرَةٌ: he contended with him for stakes, or wagers, laid by both of them to be taken by the winner; same as رَاهَنَهُ [he contended with him in a game of hazard, such as the one called المَيْسِر, or the like].

In common modern usage: he played with him at a game in which it is generally made a condition that the winner shall receive something of the loser (so according to an explanation which I find in several copies of the KT).

From تَقَمَِرَهُ, meaning “he deceived him”, because قِمَار is often deception.

The muḍāriʿ of the latter verb is قَمُرَ; and قَمِرَ.

قُمْرٌ is either the plural of أَقْمَرُ, as حُمْرٌ is of أَحْمَرُ; or the plural (or rather ism jamʿ) of قُمْرِىٌّ, as رُومٌ is of رُومِىٌّ; or قُمْرِىٌّ is a relative noun from the name of a mountain, or of a place, or of something else, according to different authors; or its ى is added to give intensiveness to its meaning.

It is one of those called فَوَاخِت [plural of فَاخِتَةٌ]; so called because it is أَقْمَر in colour, like the فَاخِتَة in El-Ḥijáz. It is a species of collared turtle-dove, of a dull white colour marked with a black collar; I have seen such in Egypt, caged, but they are rare there, and I believe they are brought from Arabia.

The قُمْرِيَّة is a species of حَمَام حَمَائِم, that is, pigeons.

Or قُمْرِيَّةٌ is applied to the female, and the male is called سَاقُ حُرٍّ. See سَاقُ حُرٍّ in article سوق.

The plural is قُمَارِىُّ, imperfectly declinable; and according to some, قَمَارَى and قُمْرٌ.
