Maṣdar تَقْلِيدٌ and قلّدها قِلَادَةً: he put a قلادة [or necklace] on her (a woman's) neck, attiring her with it.

he hung on the neck of the camel, cow, or bull brought as an offering to Mekkeh for sacrifice something to show that it was such an offering—قلّد البَدَنَةَ

Namely, an old worn-out sandal, or a piece of a skin, or of a sandal, or of a مِزَادَة, or the loop of a مزادة.

The pagan Arabs also used to hang on the necks of their camels pieces of the bark of the trees of the sacred territory of Mekkeh, as a means of protection against their enemies. Zj, on verse 2 of chapter 5 of the Qur'ān.

Esh-Shiháb observes, in the 'Ináyeh, that the measure فِعَالَةٌ, in a word that is not a maṣdar, denotes a thing that envelops or surrounds another thing; as in لِفَافَةٌ and عِمَامَةٌ and قِلَادَةٌ.

Plural قَلَائِدُ. قِلَادٌ also occurs, either as a plural of قِلَادَةٌ, in which case the kesreh and the ا in the plural are different from the kesreh and the ا in the singular, [being the proper characteristics of the plural,] or as a collective generic noun of which قِلَادَةٌ is the ism waḥda.

(Es-Suddee, L, Msb.) أَلْقَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ مَقَالِيدَ الأُمُورِ [lit., I threw to him the keys of the affairs; meaning, I committed to him the disposal, or management, of the affairs]. (A.) ضَاقَتْ مَقَالِيدُهُ , and مَقَالِدُهُ , (K,) and ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِ المَقَالِيدُ , (A,) [His means, likened to keys, became straitened: or] his affairs became straitened, or difficult, to him: (A, K:) accord. to Esh-Shiháb, from مِقْلَدٌ , signifying a twisted rope: this he says considering مَقَالِيدُ as syn. with قَلَائِدُ ; but its use in this sense is not established.
