1.1he cut it across, or crosswise, and so separated itقَطَّهُ

. He cut it, in a general sense; or he cut a hard thing, such as a حُقّة [or box], and the like, into a good shape, as a man cuts a reed on a bone.

تَقْطِيطٌ, the maṣdar of قطّطهُ, means the cutting of a حُقَّة and making it even.

Opposed to قَدَّهُ, which means he cut it in halves lengthwise, as one cuts a strap or thong; and اقتطّهُ means the same as it.

the hair became crisp, curly, or twisted and contracted, and shortقَطَّ

In it the reduplication is made manifest.

and of the second also يَقُطُّ [contrary to the general rule]; maṣdar of the first قَطٌّ, which is irregular, and of the second قَطَطٌ and قَطَاطَةٌ.

Or the hair was like that of the زَنْجِىّ: crisp, curly, or twisted and contracted, and short.

1.3the price was, or became, dear and highقَطَّ السِّعْرُ

Sh thought this explanation wrong, and took the meaning to be that the price flagged; but Az says he was mistaken.

with kesr, or يَقُطُّ, the verb being of the same class as قَتَلَ [contrary to the general rule]; maṣdar قَطٌّ and قُطُوطٌ, and also قُطَّ with damm.

Nounقَطْ4 senses · 2 main

Core sense — enough, sufficiency; it suffices; only, no moregenerated

1your sufficiency, meaning enough for you, is this thingقَطْكَ هٰذَا الشَّىْءُ

It signifies حَسْبُ [explained in the examples that follow], that is, it denotes being satisfied, or content, with a thing. It is written with fet-h to the ق and with the ط sākin, like عَنْ; and also, sometimes, قَطٍ with tenween, mejroor; and قَطِى [distinguished from قَطِى in what follows].

The term “mejroor” is used here contrary to the rules of grammar, since it implies that قط is declinable, which it is not.

It is used as a prefixed noun.

Synonym حَسْبُكَ; and like it is قَدْ.

my sufficiencyقَطْنِى

Synonym حَسْبِى; like قَدْنِى, introducing ن, as in عَنِّى and مِنِّى; and لَدُنِّى, contrary to rule, for the reason explained in treating of قَدْ, so as to keep the original sākin state of the ط; and قَطِى; and قَطِ and قَطَاطِ, like قَطَامِ, indeclinable, as signifying حَسْبِى.

the sufficiency of 'Abd-Allah is a dirhemقَطْ عَبْدِ اللّٰهِ دِرْهَمٌ

So in the Moo'ab, and Lth and the Mughnee say the like: pausing upon the ط and making قط govern a genitive case, as it does virtually in the preceding instances. The Basrees say that this is the right mode, as meaning the like of حَسْبُ زَيْدٍ دِرْهَمٌ and كَفْىَ زَيْدٍ دِرْهَمٌ. Some say قَطْ with jezm, and some say قَطُ, making it indeclinable with damm for its ending; each governs what follows it in the genitive case.

1.1it suffices me, or will suffice meقَطْنِى

It is also a verbal noun, signifying يَكْفِى [it suffices, or will suffice; it is, or will be, sufficient]; and when this is so, one says the following.

Like يَكْفِينِى [it suffices me, or will suffice me].

it suffices me (emphatically)كَفَانِى

So according to the Koofees; this is also allowable when قَطْ is equivalent to حَسْبُ, as noted above.

it suffices you (emphatically)قَطْكَ

Meaning كَفَاكَ.

it suffices me (emphatically)قَطِى

Meaning كَفَانِى: so in the copies of the K; in the CK, wrongly, قَطَّنِى. But it seems that it should be قَطْنِى, for the Mughnee and its Expositions say that in this last case the addition of the ن cannot be dispensed with.

a dirhem suffices, or will suffice, 'Abd-Allahقَطْ عَبْدَ اللّٰهِ دِرْهَمٌ

In the CK, wrongly, قَطُّ. Here it governs the accusative case, as it does virtually in the earlier instances.

a dirhem suffices 'Abd-Allahقَطْنُ عَبْدَ اللّٰهِ دِرْهَمٌ

Some add ن, with the same meaning.

Hence some say that [قَطْن in] قَطْنِى is a word formed originally in this shape, without any addition, like [حَسْب in] حَسْبِى; but J says that if the ن in قَطْنِى belonged to the root of the word, they would have said قَطْنُكَ, which is not known.

1.2I have not seen him, or it, save once, and that was enoughمَا رَأَيْتُهُ إِلَّا مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً فَقَطٌ

Here it is synonymous with حَسْبُ.

Or, as the Mutowwel says, قَطْ in فَقَطْ is a verbal noun meaning stop [asking further, or the like], as though it were the complement of a condition left out [such as “the case being so”]. Or, as the Mesáïl of Ibn-Es-Seed says, the ف is properly prefixed because the meaning is “and I was satisfied, or content, with that”, so that the ف is a conjunction (from a marginal note in a copy of the Mughnee). It therefore virtually signifies “and no more”, or “only”, and may often be rendered so; and this explains what follows.

When قَط is used to denote paucity — which El-Hareeree, in the Durrah, says happens only in negative phrases — it is written قَطْ, with jezm and without teshdeed.

you have only thisمَا عِنْدَكَ إِلَّا هٰذَا قَطْ
I know only this, todayمَا عَلِمْتُ إِلَّا هٰذَا قَطِ اليَوْمَ

But when it is followed by a conjunctive ا, it is with kesr.

he has only ten, young manمَا لَهُ إِلَّا عَشَرَةٌ قَطْ يَافَتَى

This too is without teshdeed and with jezm; and one says also قَطِّ, with teshdeed and khafd. The kesreh of the latter, in a case of this kind, distinguishes the قَطّ, which denotes small number, from قَطُّ, which denotes time.

(S.) It is also syn. with حَسْبُ in the phrase مَا رَأَيْتُهُ إِلَّا مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً فَقَطٌ [I have not seen him, or it, save once, and that was a thing sufficient or that was enough]: (S, Msb: *) or, as is said in the Mutowwel, قَطْ in فَقَطْ is a verbal noun, meaning abstain thou [from further questioning, or the like], as though it were the complement of a condition suppressed [such as “ the case being so ”]: or, as is said in the Mesáïl of Ibn-Es-Seed, the ف is properly prefixed because the meaning is and I was satisfied, or content, therewith; so that the ف is a conjunction: (from a marginal note in a copy of the Mughnee:) [it therefore virtually signifies and no more; or only; and thus it may often be rendered: and this explains what here follows:] when قَط is used to denote paucity, (M, K,) which is said by El-Hareeree, in the Durrah, to be only in negative phrases, (MF,) it is [written قَطْ ,] with jezm, (M, K,) and without teshdeed: (M:) you say, مَا عِنْدَكَ إِلَّا هٰذَا قَطْ [which may be rendered Thou hast not save this only]: but when it is followed by a conjunctive ا , it is with kesr; [as in the saying,] مَا عَلِمْتُ إِلَّا هٰذَا قَطِ اليَوْمَ [virtually mean- ing I knew not, or, emphatically, know not, save this only, to-day]: (K:) and also, (K,) when thus using it, (M,) you say, مَا لَهُ إِلَّا عَشَرَةٌ قَطْ يَافَتَى [likewise virtually meaning He has not save ten only, O young man], without teshdeed, and with jezm; and قَطِّ , with teshdeed and khafd; (Lh, M, K;) the kesreh of the latter, in a case of this kind, being to distinguish the قَطّ which denotes [paucity of] number from قَطُّ , which denotes time. Nounقَطُّ1 sense

Core sense — ever, at any time in the pastgenerated

1I have not seen him, or it, everمَا رَأَيْتُهُ قَطُّ

An adverbial noun, generally denoting time, or past time, used to include all past time; also قُطُّ, the first vowel being assimilated to the second; and قَطُ and قُطُ; and some say قَطْ, from which قَطُ is formed, its ending being made like that of the primary form قَطُّ to show its origin, or this would be better than قَطُ; and قُطْ, like مُذْ, which is rare. Of all these the first is the most chaste.

When time is meant by it, it is always with refa, without tenween; or one says also قَطِّ, with kesr and teshdeed to the ط, according to IAar; and قَطَّ, with fet-h and teshdeed to the ط, as well as with damm to the ط without teshdeed. Some copies of the K add here “and with refa to the ط”, and the CK adds further “without teshdeed”; but I find two copies without any addition of this redundant kind, for by “refa” is meant here, as in a former instance, “damm”, though improperly, since the word is indeclinable.

I have not done it everمَا فَعَلْتُهُ قَطَّ

That is, in the time that is past, or in what has been cut off of my life; the derivation is from قَطَطْتُ, meaning “I cut”, since the past is cut off from the present and the future. It is indeclinable because it implies the meaning of مُذْ and إِلَى, its sense being مُذْ أَنْ خُلِقْتُ إِلَى الآنَ [since I was created until now]; and it takes a vowel for its ending to prevent two sākin letters coming together; and that vowel is refa [damm] because it is like قَبْلُ and بَعْدُ.

According to Ks, قَطُّ is a contraction of قَطَطُ.

Sb says that it denotes الإِنْتِهَآء [apparently meaning stop asking further, or the like; for El-Hareeree says, in the Durrah, that قَطُّ and قَطْ both signify the same as حَسْبُ], and that it is indeclinable, with damm for its ending, like حَسْبُ.

I have not done this alone, nor everمَا فَعَلْتُ هٰذَا قَطْ وَلَا قَطُّ

In the CK, قَطُّ ولا قُطُ; but the first قط has jezm to the ط, and the second has teshdeed and damm to the ط.

he, or it, has not ceased to be in this way during all past time, young manمَا زَالَ عَلَى هٰذَا مُذْ قُطَّ يَا فَتَى

With damm to the ق and with teshdeed.

It is used only in negative phrases relating to past time; the saying of the common people لَا أَفْعَلُهُ قَطُّ [meaning I will not do it ever] is incorrect, for with respect to the future one says عَوْضُ [or أَبَدًا]. Or it is mostly so used, according to Ibn-Málik; but it occurs after an affirmative phrase in places in El-Bukháree, in his Saheeh, for example:

the longest prayer which I have prayed everأَطْوَلُ صَلَاةٍ صَلَّيْتُهَا قَطُّ
he performed the وُضُوْء three times everتَوَضَّأَ ثَلَاثًا قَطُّ

This is from the Sunan of Aboo-Dáwood. Ibn-Málik holds such use to be right, and says it is one of the things many of the grammarians have not noticed; El-Karmánee, however, interprets these instances as though they were negative.

Or a writing of reckoning; or a written obligation; or a written obligation binding one to give a gift or present, which again explains the words of the Qur'ān quoted above.

The plural is قِطَاطٌ and قِطَطَةٌ, or قِطَطٌ.

Qur’ānic occurrences قِطّ
38:16
وَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا عَجِّل لَّنَا قِطَّنَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ ٱلْحِسَابِ

They say: "Our Lord! hasten to us our sentence (even) before the Day of Account!"

Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
