muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarقُرْبٌ قِرْبَانٌ قَرَبٌ قِرَابَةٌ

Core sense — he was, or became, near; he approached it; he journeyed to water by nightgenerated

1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe (a man) was, or became, near to itقَرُبَ مِنْهُ

maṣdar قُرْبٌ, قُرْبَةٌ, قَرَابَةٌ, قُرْبَى and مَقْرَبَةٌ, to which may be added some other synonyms mentioned below, with قُرْبٌ and قَرَابَةٌ.

It, and he, was, or became, near; synonym دَنَا, the opposite of بَعُدَ.

Or قُرْبٌ is nearness in place, قُرْبَةٌ in station, grade, or rank, and قَرَابَةٌ and قُرْبَى in الرَّحِم [meaning relationship, or relationship by the female side]; or, according to the T, قَرَابَةٌ is in النَّسَب [apparently relationship in a general sense], and قُرْبَى in الرَّحِم [apparently relationship by the female side].

Also إِلَيْهِ and قَرِبَهُ; maṣdar of the first verb قُرْبٌ or قُرْبٌ and قُرْبَةٌ and so on as above, or قُرْبٌ, مَقْرَبَةٌ and مَقْرُبَةٌ, and of the second verb قِرْبَانٌ and قُرْبَانٌ; synonym دَنَا.

Or only the first verb means this; but when one says لَا تَقْرَبْ كَذَا, with fet-ḥ to the ر, the meaning is: do not occupy yourself with doing such a thing.

I did the thing, or affair; or I approached it, or approached doing itقَرِبْتُ الأَمْرَ

and also قَرَبْتُهُ, that is, like تَعِبَ and like قَتَلَ. The meaning may also be: I approached doing something with it or to it.

do not commit fornication, or adulteryلَا تَقْرَبُوا ٱلزِّنَا
I had intercourse with the womanقَرِبْتُ المَرْأَةَ

An example of the first of these meanings, from the Qur'ān 17:34; according to some it is an example of the other meaning.

a metonymic phrase.

do not approach the thing, or the place, that is forbiddenلَا تَقْرَبُوا الحِمَى

That is, لَا تَدْنُوا مِنْهُ; an example of the second of the meanings given above.

he became disturbed by the near and the remote circumstances of his caseأَخَذَهُ مَا قَرُبَ وَمَا بَعُدَ

The Arabs say this of a man when something has disturbed and grieved him; or the meaning is: recent and old griefs took hold on him. See art. قدم and art. بعد.

he drew near to me and drew nearerدَنَا مِنِّى وَقَرُبَ

So explained by Zj; see art. دلو, Form 5, in that article.

Several other verbs belonging to this article are synonymous, or nearly so, with قَرُبَ or with قَرِبَ in the senses explained above. Thus اقرب is synonymous with قَرُبَ in the first of those senses, as أَدْنَى is with دَنَا, which has it for its maṣdar.

الإِقْرَابُ means الدُّبُوُّ.

اقترب also is synonymous with قَرُبَ in the first of the senses explained above; that is, it is synonymous with دَنَا, or with تقارب, meaning he, or it, drew near.

and the fulfilment of the promise shall draw nearوَٱقْتَرَبَ الوَعْدُ

Qur'ān 21:97; it means تقارب.

he drew near to meاقترب مِنِّى

It is also said to have a more particular meaning than قَرُبَ, since it denotes intensiveness in القُرْب; so says Ibn-'Arafeh, probably meaning that it denotes labour and difficulty in accomplishing the act.

تقرّب is likewise synonymous with قَرُبَ, that is, دَنَا, in the phrase تقرّب مِنْهُ [see قَرُبَ مِنْهُ]; or it means he drew near, or approached, to a thing little by little.

he was, or became, near, or he approached, to the thing, or affair, or to doing itقارب الشَّىْءَ

Also الأَمْرَ, like قَرِبَهُ in many instances.

Qur’ān 17:33 approximate — somewhere between 17:13 and 17:44 Lane cites “Kur xvii. 34”
Qur’ān 21:97 matched to Lane’s own quotation of it Lane cites “Kur xxi. 97”
Qur’ān 21:97 Lane quotes this verse
وَٱقْتَرَبَ ٱلْوَعْدُ ٱلْحَقُّ فَإِذَا هِىَ شَـٰخِصَةٌ أَبْصَـٰرُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يَـٰوَيْلَنَا قَدْ كُنَّا فِى غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ هَـٰذَا بَلْ كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ

Then will the true promise draw nigh (of fulfilment): then behold! the eyes of the Unbelievers will fixedly stare in horror: "Ah! Woe to us! we were indeed heedless of this; nay, we truly did wrong!"Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

Some copies of the K have الإِبِلَ, others الإِبِلُ, as in the K; but according to Th the verb is قَرَبَتِ الإِبِلُ.

I journeyed by night in order to reach the water in the morningقَرَبْتُ

Said by a man of himself.

1.2.1I journeyed to the water by night in order to reach it the next morningقَرَبْتُ المَآءَ

1.3he put the sword into its scabbardقَرَبَ السَّيْفَ
he made for the sword a scabbardاقربهُ

Maṣdar قَرْبٌ. The scabbard is the قِرَاب.

Maṣdar إِقْرَابٌ.

Either of these two verbs may also mean he made for the sword a قِرَاب; or the second of them has both meanings; or the first is said of a sword or of a knife in the one sense, and the second in the other; or the first means he made for the sword a قِرَاب, and the second, he put the sword into its قِرَاب.

he made a scabbardقرّب قِرَابًا

Also اقربهُ: he made a قِرَاب.

1.4the feeding of a guest with the flanks of an animalقَرْبٌ

A maṣdar whose verb is قَرَبَ. The word for the flanks is أَقْرَاب, plural of قُرْبٌ or قُرُبٌ.

1.5he (a man) had a complaint of his flankقَرِبَ

With kesr to the ر, like فَرِح, maṣdar apparently قَرَبٌ. The flank is his قُرْب or قُرُب.

he had a complaint of his flankقرّب

Maṣdar تَقْرِيبٌ; in one source this verb is only indicated by the mention of its maṣdar.

[a near associate, or] a consessor, or a particular, or special, associate or companion [&c.: see قُرْبَانٌ ]. (TA.) قَرَّبَهُ إِلَيْهِمْ , in the Kur li. 27, means He presented it, or offered it, to them: (Jel:) or he placed it, or put it, before them. (Bd.) And one says also, قرّب خَصْمَهُ إِلَى السُّلْطَانِ [He brought, or placed, his adversary before the Sultán]. (Mgh in art. رفع .) And قرّب لِلّٰهِ قَرْبَانًا [He offered, or presented, to God, an offering, or oblation]. Said of a pregnant female, of a woman, of a mare, of a ewe or goat, and also of an ass, but apparently not properly of a camel — though it is sometimes said of a camel, as under غَمُوس and in art. ك.

4.1.2he was, or became, near to the age of shedding his central incisorsاقرب

Occurs in a tradition of Aboo-Hureyreh.

4.1.5he made the camels journey by night in order to reach the water in the morningاقرب الإِبِلَ
they hastened their camels to the waterاقربوا إِبِلَهُمْ

After pasturing them in the tract between them and the watering-place, and journeying on for part of the time until only a night, or an evening, remained between them and the water.

4.1.6the people, or party, became persons whose camels were making a night journey to waterاقرب القَوْمُ

Such a journey is termed قَرَبٌ. The ism fāʿil is said to be قارب, not مُقْربٌ; A'Obeyd calls the first of these irregular. [But see قَرَبَ, which is explained as having almost exactly the meaning here assigned to اقرب.]

It is also mentioned, apparently on the authority of AA, that the same phrase and the same irregular ism fāʿil are used when the people's camels are مُتَقَارِبَة, which means few, or near together; but this word is probably a copyist's mistake for قَوَارِبُ — see قَارِبٌ.

1Zeyd is close to you, near you in respect of placeإِنَّ قُرْبَكَ زَيْدًا

Mentioned in the first sentence of this article as a maṣdar; the opposite of بُعْدٌ. Used as a simple noun it means nearness, said to be properly, or primarily, nearness of place, that is, vicinity, as distinguished from قُرْبَةٌ and the like.

One does not say إِنَّ بُعْدَكَ زَيْدًا, because قُرْب can be used as an adverbial noun of place more readily than بُعْد.

he is close to you, near you in respect of placeهُوَ قُرَابَتَكَ

This phrase occurs frequently.

Also مِنْ قَرِيبٍ: he took it with his hand from a near place or spot.

I saw him, or it, from a near place or spotرَأَيْتُهُ مِنْ قُرْبٍ

Also مِنْ قَرِيبٍ: from within a short distance. See art. ام.

1.1do that soonاِفْعَلْ ذٰلِكَ بِقَرَابٍ

It is also synonymous with قَرَابٌ, nearness in respect of time.

Like the phrase قَرِيبٍ عَنْ. According to the K the word قراب in this case is like سَحَاب.

fleeing soon, in eagerness of desire for safety, is the more, or most, shrewd courseالفِرَارُ بِقِرَابٍ أَكْيَسُ

So in the S; some relate it as بِقُرَابٍ. IB says that J cited this proverb next after the قِرَاب of the sword, but should have said that القِرَابُ is also synonymous with القُرْبُ, and should then have adduced the proverb as an example of that.

This rendering, however, needs consideration: according to Meyd, who gives only the reading بِقِرَابٍ, the proverb means that one who flees with the قِرَاب — by which the scabbard is meant — when the sword has passed out of his possession is shrewder than one who lets the قِرَاب pass from him as well. Both explanations are given in Freytag's Arabic Proverbs 2:210, but قريب is there wrongly put for قُرْب.

1.2

See also قَرَابَةٌ.

1.3

It is also a plural of قَرِيبٌ; see art. زلف.

2the flankقُرْبٌ

Also قُرُبٌ, the first of the two being the original form. The flank is the خَاصِرَة; or the part from the شَاكِلَة — which is much the same as خَاصِرَة — to the مَرَاقّ, the soft parts of the belly; and likewise from the رَفْغ, generally meaning the groin, to the armpit, on each side.

Properly used of a horse; sometimes used figuratively of a she-camel, of an ass, and of a man (see Form 5, last sentence). The plural is أَقْرَابٌ, which is also used in place of the dual.

Show Lane's original text
[mentioned in the first sentence of this art. as an inf. n.] is the contr. of بُعْدٌ : (S, O:) [used as a simple subst., it signifies Nearness, and] it is said to be [properly, or primarily,] in respect of place; [i. e. vicinity;] as distinguished from قُرْبَةٌ &c. (Msb, TA.) You say, إِنَّ قُرْبَكَ زَيْدًا [Verily Zeyd is in thy vicinity; i. e., near thee in respect of place]; but not إِنَّ بُعْدَكَ زَيْدًا ; because قُرْب is more capable of being used as an adv. n. of place than بُعْد : in like manner they said also هُوَ قُرَابَتَكَ , meaning [He is in thy vicinity; i. e.,] near thee in respect of place. Do thou that soon; like as one says, قَرِيبٍ عَنْ ]: (K, TA:) accord. to the K, the word قراب in this case is like سَحَاب : but it is said in a prov., الفِرَارُ بِقِرَابٍ أَكْيَسُ , thus in the S, or, as some relate it, بِقُرَابٍ ; and IB says, J has cited this prov. [next] after the قِرَاب of the sword, but should have said that القِرَابُ is also syn. with القُرْبُ , and should then have adduced the prov. as an ex. meaning The fleeing soon in eagerness of desire for safety [is more, or most, shrewd]: (TA:) [this rendering, however, requires consideration; for, accord. to Meyd, who gives only the reading بِقِرَابٍ , the meaning of the prov. is, that he who flees with the قِرَاب (by which is meant the scabbard) when the sword has passed away from his possession is more shrewd than he who causes, or suffers, the قِرَاب also to pass away from him: in Freytag's Arab Prov. ii. 210, both of these explanations are given; but قريب is there erroneously put for قُرْب .] See also قَرَابَةٌ . Nounقَرَبٌ2 senses · 1 main

Core sense — a journey by night to reach water in the morninggenerated

1

Mentioned in the latter half of the first paragraph of this article as a maṣdar; said to be a noun, meaning a journey to water when it is a night's journey distant; or, as As said on the authority of an Arab of the desert, a journey by night in order to reach the water in the morning; and so قِرَابَةٌ, also mentioned above as a maṣdar.

A journey by night in order to arrive at the water on the second following day is called طَلَقٌ. The word also means the seeking of water by night; or such a journey when the water is not more than a night's journey distant; or the first day on which one journeys to water two days distant, the second day being called طَلَقٌ — but the converse seems to be the truth, being asserted by several of the highest authorities and agreeing with the derivation of each of the two words; see طَلَقٌ. Or it is the night after which, in the morning, one arrives at the water.

لَيْلَةُ القَرَبِ is the night in which people with their camels hasten to the water on a journey of this kind; the term قَرَبٌ بَصْبَاصٌ is applied to a people's letting their camels pasture while they journey towards water, and then hastening towards it when an evening remains between them and it.

Or, as is said on the authority of As, لَيْلَةُ القَرَبِ is the second night after the pastor has turned the faces of his camels towards the water and so left them to pasture, this second night being the night of hard driving; the first night is called لَيْلَةُ الطَّلَقِ. According to AA, the journey called القَرَبُ is one of three days or more.

Hence القَرَبَ is used to mean what is a night's journey distant; see art. نوب, in explanation of a verse cited there. Or, according to IAar, قَرَب there means near, so as to be visited repeatedly; or, as AA says, at such a distance as to be visited once in three days.

Occurs in a tradition, quoted from the Book of the Law revealed to Moses and referring to the Arabs: they seek to bring themselves near to God by shedding their blood in fighting in the cause of religion, whereas the قربان of preceding peoples consisted in the slaughtering of oxen or cows, of sheep or goats, and of camels.

They (also) said: "Allah took our promise not to believe in an messenger unless He showed us a sacrifice consumed by Fire (From heaven)." Say: "There came to you messengers before me, with clear Signs and even with what ye ask for: why then did ye slay them, if ye speak the truth?"Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

Core sense — near in place or time; a relation, a relativegenerated

1in a place near to meهُوَ قَرِيبٌ مِنِّى

Near in respect of place. In this sense it is used alike for singular, plural and dual, and for masculine and feminine, as is بَعِيدٌ in the opposite sense.

The Arabs say also هُمَا قَرِيبٌ مِنِّى, هُمْ قَرِيبٌ مِنِّى and هِىَ قَرِيبٌ مِنِّى and the like, meaning فِى مَكَانٍ قَرِيبٍ.

Hind is nearهِنْدٌ قَرِيبٌ مِنْكَ

As though one said هِنْدٌ مَوْضِعُهَا قَرِيبٌ مِنْكَ: Hind, her place is near to you.

the mercy of God is near to the well-doersإِنَّ رَحْمَةَ ٱللّٰهِ قَرِيبٌ مِنَ المُحْسِنِينَ

Qur'ān 7:54; but it is allowable to say قَرِيبَةٌ, as also بَعِيدَةٌ.

قريب is here without ة because رحمة is not really, but only conventionally, of the feminine gender; but this reason is not satisfactory, since it does not apply to the other cases mentioned above. It is also said to be without ة because it is likened to an adjective of the measure فَعُولٌ, which does not receive the feminine ending ة.

Hence the phrase مِنْ قَرِيبٍ; see قُرْبٌ, former half, in two places.

Zeyd is in a place near to youإِنَّ قَرِيبًا مِنْكَ زَيْدًا

1.2this woman is my relationهٰذِهِ المَرْأَةُ قَرِيبَتِى

Also near in the sense of related by birth or by marriage; generally used as an adjective in which the quality of a noun predominates, meaning a relation, or relative. In this sense it takes the feminine form, by universal consent.

they two are relationsهُمَا قَرِيبَتَانِ

The dual form is used likewise; one says هُمَا قَرِيبَانِ as well.

It has a plural, namely أَقْرِبَآءُ.

they are my relationsهُمْ أَقْرِبَائِى

Also أَقَارِبِى, and أَقْرَبِىَّ, this last originally أَقْرَبُوىَ. The first means: they are my relations; the second and third are properly plurals of أَقْرَبُ, meaning: they are my nearer, or nearest, or very near, relations. In the T the second is said to be a plural of قَرِيبٌ; and most copies of the K imply that أَقْرِبَآءُ, أَقَارِبُ and أَقْرَبُونَ — mentioned in the Msb without any distinction of meaning — are all to be understood in the latter sense.

قُرْبٌ is also a plural of قَرِيبٌ, apparently in the sense just given, as غُرْبٌ is of غَرِيبٌ; see art. زلف. قَرْبَى is allowable as a plural of فَرِيبٌ, and the plural of قَرِيبَةٌ is قَرَائِبُ.

he is my relationهُوَ قَرِيبِى

One says likewise هُوَ ذُو قَرَابَتِى, ذُو قَرَابَةٍ مِنِّى, ذُو مَقْرُبَةٍ منّى and ذُو قُرْبَى مِنِّى, but not هُوَ قَرَابَتِى, which only the vulgar say; nor هُمْ قَرَابَاتِى. According to Z, هُوَ قَرَابَتِى is allowable, being accounted for as a phrase in which the prefixed noun ذُو is suppressed; and it has moreover been asserted to be correct and pure in verse and prose.

قَرَابَةٌ also occurs in the traditions in the sense of أَقَارِبُ. The Nh says it is a maṣdar used as an adjective, in agreement with general analogy; the Tes-heel says it is an ism jamʿ of قَرِيبٌ, as صَحَابَةٌ is of صَاحِبٌ.

Mtr: قَرَابَةٌ is correctly applied both to one and to a plural number, being originally a maṣdar, so that one says هُو قَرَابَتِى and هُمْ قَرَابَتِى; though the pure phrase is ذُو قَرَابَتِى of one, ذَوَا قَرَابَتِى of two, and ذَوُو قَرَابَتِى of a plural number.

Core sense — relationship, or relationship by the female sidegenerated

1between me and him is a relationship, or a relationship by the female sideبَيْنِى وَبَيْنَهُ قَرَابَةٌ

Originally a maṣdar, of قَرُبَ, as apparently is every one of the synonyms that follow: قُرْبَى, قُرْبَةٌ, قُرُبَةٌ, قُرْبٌ, مَقْرُبَةٌ, مَقْرَبَةٌ and مَقْرِبَةٌ.
