(Bd, ii. 28.) قَدُسَ , aor. قَدُسَ , (TK,) inf. n. قُدْسٌ and قُدُسٌ , (S, A, K,) said of a thing, (TK,) It was, or became, [holy, accord. to the most common usage, or] pure. (S, * A, * K, * TK.) قدّس لَهُ has the same meaning, from قَدَسَ فِى الأَرْضِ explained above; the ل in that case is redundant.

This is the meaning in the Qur'ān 2:28, according to Zj.

He purified him or it; because one who purifies a thing removes it far from unclean things.

Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a vicegerent on earth." They said: "Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said: "I know what ye know not."

, (A,) inf. n. تَقْدِيسٌ , (S, M, K,) [He hallowed, or sanctified, him or it: he consecrated him or it]. and قُدُسٌ [Holiness, sanctity:] purity: (S, A, Msb, K:) [each] a subst. as well as an inf. n.: (S, A, K:) the former a contraction of the latter. (Msb.) Hence, (S,) حَظِيرَةُ القُدْسِ , or القُدُسِ , [The Enclosure of Holiness or Purity;] i. e., Paradise. (S, A.) Sb used to say قَدُّوسٌ and سَبُّوحٌ, with fetḥ to the first letter of each.

Th says that every noun of the measure فعُّول has fetḥ to the first letter, like سَفُّودٌ and كَلُّوبٌ and the like, except سُبُّوحٌ and قُدُّوسٌ and ذُرُّوحٌ; and in the K فُرُّوجٌ is added [see سُبُّوحٌ], for these are mostly with damm, though sometimes with fetḥ.

Lh says that all agree in pronouncing سبّوح and قدّوس with damm, though fetḥ is allowable; but Az denies this agreement. Lh adds that all other words of the measure فعُّول have fetḥ.

Imra-el-Keys says, describing dogs and a wild bull:

And they (the dogs) overtook him (namely the bull), seizing the shank and the sciatic vein, and tearing his skin, as the children of the Christians tear the garment of the monk that has come from بَيْت المَقْدِس [or Jerusalem] to obtain a blessing from it.

This is how the verse stands in the handwriting of Aboo-Sahl; but in all the copies of the S we find ثَوْبَ المُقَدَّسِى with ى.
