muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُأَقْدِرُهُmaṣdarقَدْرٌ قَدَارَهٌ
Core sense — I measured the thing; God decreed it; I had power to do itgenerated
1.1I measured the thing; I determined its quantity, measure, size, extent, amount, limits, or number—قدّرتُ الشَّىْءَ
the is from التَّقْدِيرُ. According to the Mgh only the former muḍāriʿ is used, as what follows shows.
Its maṣdar is تَقْدِيرٌ. This phrase is mentioned later in the S, but left unexplained.
he computed, or determined by conjecture, the quantity, measure, extent, amount, or number of the thing—قدّر الشَّىْءَ
The words حَزَرَهُ are added: he did this in order to know how much it was.
It is said in a tradition: إِذَا غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمُ الهِلَالُ فَٱقْدِرُوا لَهُ and فَٱقْدُرُوا, or إِنْ غْمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَٱقْدِرُوا, with kesr to the د; فَٱقْدُرُوا with ḍamma is wrong. Ks says that you say قَدَرْتُ الشَّىْءَ with kesr, and that he had heard no other muḍāriʿ.
The meaning of the tradition is: [When the new moon of Ramaḍán is hidden from you by cloud or mist,] compute the number of the days to it, and so complete Shaʿbán, making it thirty days; or, as some say, compute the mansions of the moon and its course in them, up to the new moon.
on this sense See also Form 5.
1.1.1See and know your rank, or standing, among us—أُقْدُرْ بِذَرْعِكَ بَيْنَنَا
Apparently from the above.
1.1.2And they have not estimated God with the estimation that is due to Him—مَا قَدَرُوا ٱللّٰهَ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ
Kur 6:91, and other places. Or: they have not magnified, or honoured, God with the magnifying, or honouring, that is due to Him, since قَدْرٌ also means a magnifying, or honouring; or they have not assigned to God the attributes that are due to Him; or they have not known what God is in reality. (El-Basáïr.)
1.1.3He measured the thing by the thing—قَدَرَ الشَّىْءَ بِالشَّىْءِ
maṣdar قَدْرٌ and قدّرهُ به.
he measured it by its measure—قدّرهُ عَلَى مِثَالِهِ
So under the article قيس.
he measured, or compared, the two things, or cases, together—قدّر بَيْنَ الأَمْرَيْنِ
Synonymous with قَايَسَ, under the article قيس; and قَادَرَ بَيْنَهُمَا means the same, under the article قيس.
1.1.4He thought upon the thing, or affair, considered its outcome, and compared one part of it with another—قَدَرَ الأَمْرَ
Apparently from the above.
Also إِلَى الأَمْرِ [and قدّرهُ].
See also Form 2.
1.1.5I made the garment according to his measure; I adapted it to his measure—قَدَرْتُ عَلَيْهِ الثَّوْبَ
.
apparently, I made the thing according to his, or its, measure; I proportioned the thing to him, or it—قَدَرْتُ عَلَيْهِ الشَّىْءَ
وصفته, by which it is explained in the TA, seems, as IbrD thinks, to be a mistake for وَضَعْتُهُ.
he made the thing by measure, or according to a measure; he proportioned it—قدّر الشَّىْءَ
Synonymous with جَعَلَهُ بِقَدَرٍ. The primary meaning of تَقْدِيرٌ is the making of a thing according to the measure of another thing.
1.1.6God decreed, appointed, ordained, or decided that against him, and for him—قَدَرَ ٱللّٰهُ ذٰلِكَ عَلَيْهِ
maṣdar قَدْرٌ and قَدَرٌ, or this last is a simple substantive; and مَقْدَرَةٌ.
God decreed, appointed, ordained, or decided that against him, and for him, adapting it to his particular case—قدّرهُ عليه
This form is more common; maṣdar تَقْدِيرٌ and لَهُ.
[The first meaning follows an explanation of قَدَرٌ in the K; the second follows an explanation of قَدَرٌ by Lth, of قَدْرٌ and قَدَرٌ in the S, and of قَدَرٌ in the Msb: see قَدْرٌ below.]
God decreed, or ordained, good for him—قَدَرَ ٱللّٰهُ لَهُ بِخَيْرٍ
1.1.7He (God) distributed, divided, or apportioned sustenance, or the means of subsistence—قَدَرَ
As though by measure.. In the CK the verb is قَدَّرَ.
Hence, some say, the name لَيْلَةُ القَدْرِ [in the Kur, ch. 97], as being the night in which the means of subsistence are apportioned. See also قَدْرٌ below.
1.1.8his means of subsistence were straitened to him—قُدِرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُ
Also: He (God) straitened, or made scanty, the means of subsistence — as though He measured and limited it., the former being the reading adopted by the seven readers of the Kur-án, and the more chaste.
See Kur 65:7.; like قُتِرَ.
He made the thing strait, or distressing, to him—قَدَرُ عَلَيْهِ الشَّىْءَ
maṣdar قَدْرٌ, قَدَرٌ, and قُدْرَةٌ. And قدّر, maṣdar تَقْدِيرٌ, has the same meaning.
He scanted his household; he was niggardly, or parsimonious, towards them in expenditure—قَدَرَ عَلَى عِيَالِهِ
Like قَتَرَ.
And he thought that We would not straiten him—فَظَنَّ أَنْ لَنْ نَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ
In the Kur 21:87. Or the meaning is لَنْ نُقَدِّرَ عَلَيْهِ مَا قَدَّرْنَا مِنْ كَوْنِهِ فِى بَطْنِ الحُوتِ, for نَقْدِر is synonymous with نُقَدِّر, and this is correct: that is, We would not decree against him what We decreed, of the straitness that should befall him in the belly of the fish. It cannot be from القُدْرَةُ [meaning power, or ability], for whoever thinks this is an unbeliever.
1.1.9He prepared it—قَدَرَهُ
maṣdar قَدَارَهٌ and قدّرهُ.
1.1.10
And the former: He assigned, or appointed, a particular time for it.
1.2I had power, or ability, to do the thing; I was able to do it, or to prevail against it—قَدَرْتُ عَلَى الشَّىْءِ
the former being the commonly known one; maṣdar قُدْرَةٌ, and قِدْرَانٌ with kesr — this last written in a copy of the T as قَدَرَانٌ [and in one copy of the S as قُدْرَانٌ] — and قَدْرٌ, مَقْدُرَةٌ, مَقْدَرَهٌ, مَقْدِرَهٌ, مِقْدَارٌ, مَقْدَرٌ, قَدَارٌ, and قِدَارٌ.
There is also قَدِرْتُ عَلَيْهِ, a form of weak authority, mentioned by Yaakoob, and by Sgh from Th, and said by IKtt to belong to the dialect of Benoo-Murrah, of Ghaṭafán; its maṣdars are قَدَرٌ, قَدَارَةٌ, قُدُورَهٌ, and قُدُورٌ, these four being of قَدِرَ. All that are mentioned here as from the K are maṣdars. And اقتدرت عليه, or this has a stronger meaning.
I have no power over you—مَا لِى عَلَيْكَ مَقْدُورَةٌ
Also مَقْدَرَةٌ and مَقْدِرَةٌ, that is, قُدْرَةٌ.
Power drives away the care one has for what is sacred, or for religion, so as to avoid suspicion—المَقْدُورَةُ تُذْهِبُ الحَفِيظَةَ
1.2.1
See also قُدْرَةٌ below.
1.3He cooked the contents of the cooking-pot—قَدَرَ القِدْرَ
قَدَرَ and اقتدر are like طَبَخَ and إِطَّبَخَ [meaning He cooked, and he cooked for himself, in a قِدْر, or cooking-pot].
.
He ordered me to cook a cooking-pot of flesh-meat—أَمَرَنِى أَنْ أَقْدُرَ لَحْمًا
Do you cook for yourselves in a cooking-pot, or roast?—أَتَقْتَدِرُونَ أَمْ تَشْتَوُونَ
