قدح

Said of the tree and of the tooth; maṣdar as above.

So that it became like the قَدَح [q. v.].

It is synonymous with مُقَادَعَةٌ [so in a copy of the A, clearly a mistranscription for مُقَاذَعَةٌ, with ذ], from القَدْحُ, meaning the act of blaming or censuring and the like, synonymous with الطَّعْنُ.

In the A this immediately follows قَادَحَهُ, as meaning نَاظَرَهُ.

Fire was, or became, struck, or produced, from the wood, or stick; so in the L, in art. صلد.

Literally: he asked, or demanded, that another's زِنَاد (plural of زَنْدٌ [q. v.]) should produce fire.

Figuratively: he asked, or demanded, that he might make use of another's help.

The second of the two words also means rottenness, decay, or unsoundness; blackness that appears in the teeth; and a crack, or fissure, in wood, or in a stick or rod — and so does the first.

In the CK the first of the two words is here wrongly given with fetḥ to the د.

The first is originally a maṣdar.

Each, in the sense given here, is an adjective in which the quality of a substantive predominates, so they are more properly explained as meaning a thing that cankers, or corrodes.

An arrow, that is, the pared wood, or rod, of an arrow, before it has been furnished with feathers and a head; or an arrow when straightened and fit to be feathered and headed; or a rod that has reached the desired growth, has been pruned, and cut to the length required for an arrow; and particularly such as is used in the game called المَيْسِر.

Plural قِدَاحٌ, a plural of many; and, as a plural of few, and according to the L of قِدْحٌ in the last of the senses given above, أَقْدُحُ, أَقْدَاحٌ, and أَقَادِيحُ, the last being a plural of a plural [that is, of أَقْدَاحٌ].

In speaking of the arrows used in the game called ضَرَبَ بِالقِدَاحِ المَيْسِر and ضَرَبَ القِدَاحَ, and of the two arrows used in practising sortilege, one says ضَرَبَ بِالقِدْحَيْنِ; see art. ضرب, p. 1778, col. 3.

A proverb, meaning he told me the truth, or he told me what was in his mind. The وسم of the قدح is the mark denoting its share [of the slaughtered camel], and the mark is sometimes made with fire. (Meyd.)

This too is a proverb, meaning know yourself.

This seems to have been an arrow remarkable for frequent good luck, and the phrase is proverbial for goodness of effect.

A drinking-cup or bowl; a well-known vessel for drinking, large enough to satisfy the thirst of two men (A ʿObeyd); or a small one and a large one. In the K, under عُلْبَةٌ, it is applied to a vessel used for milking, sometimes made of camel's skin and sometimes of wood; it was used for drinking and for milking. Plural أَقْدَاحٌ.

From a tradition; it means: do not make me last in being mentioned, because the rider on a camel hangs his قدح on the hinder part of his saddle when he has finished putting on his gear, placing it behind him.

A single act of striking, or producing, fire.

A ladleful of broth; some say that قَدْحَةٌ means the same.

The act of striking, or producing, fire with the مِقْدَحَةٌ.

From a tradition.

This word, and أَقْدَحُ, or قَدُوحٌ أَقْدَحُ, denote the fly, which one never sees except as though producing fire with its two fore legs, by rubbing them together as one rubs together the زَنْد and the زَنْدَة.

But in a verse cited by Meyd in his Proverbs, instead of الاقدح القدوح we find القَدُوح الأَقْرَح, and he says that الأَقْرَحُ [q. v.] is from القُرْحَةُ, and that every ذُبَاب has on its face a قُرْحَة (a white mark); see that verse in Freytag's Arab. Prov., 2. 48, and see also EM, p. 228.

قَدُوحٌ also means a well whose water is laded out with the hand; or a well whose water is taken only by successive ladings with the hand.

The pieces of wood of the camel's saddle called رَحْل; the TA has رمل, but the right reading is shown by the context. The word has no singular.

Broth, apparently because it is laded out; or some broth remaining in the bottom of the cooking-pot; or what remains in the bottom of the cooking-pot and is laded out with pains; and so مَقْدُوحٌ.

The art, or craft, of making the vessels called أَقْدَاح [plural of قَدَحٌ].

Also a maker of the vessels called أَقْدَاح [plural of قَدَحٌ].

And a substantive meaning: the blossoms of plants before they open; or the extremities of fresh, juicy plants; or the extremities, consisting of fresh, juicy leaves, of plants; or the soft, tender suckers or offsets of the trefoil, or clover, called فِصْفِصَة, in the dialect of El-ʿIrāq. Ism waḥda قَدَّاحَةٌ.

A stone from which one strikes fire; and so قَدَّاحٌ.

A canker-worm; the worm that cankers, or corrodes, trees and teeth. Collective generic noun قَادِحٌ, occurring in the K in art. خرب and elsewhere. Plural قَوَادِحُ.
