Core sense — he poured it out, he made it flow abundantly; they pushed on in a multitudegenerated
4.1
See form 1, first sentence.
4.2
He filled a vessel so that it overflowed; or, according to Lh, simply he filled a vessel. ISd says that the former is, in his opinion, the correct meaning.
4.2.1he poured the water on himself, or on his body—افاض المَآءَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ
He made water, tears, and the like to run, or flow, or to pour out, or to pour out violently, or to gush out; he poured water out copiously.
Also على جَسَدِهِ.
he poured forth his tears—افاض دُمُوعَهُ
Also دَمْعَهُ.
the eye poured forth tears—افاضت العَيْنُ الدَّمْعَ
4.2.2figurative · مجازGod made good, or wealth, and the like, to abound—افاض ٱللّٰهُ الخَيْرَ
4.2.3figurative · مجازhe put the coat of mail on him—افاض عَلَيْهِ الدِّرْعَ
Like saying صَبَّهَا, literally “he poured it”.
4.2.4figurative · مجازthey pushed on, or went quickly, in a multitude from ʿArafát to Minè—أَفَاضُوا مِنْ عَرَفَاتٍ
Synonym دَفَعُوا, or اِنْدَفَعُوا, exclaiming لَبَّيْكَ. Or they returned and dispersed themselves from ʿArafát; or they hastened from ʿArafát to another place, this last from Ibn-ʿArafeh.
In agreement with all of these renderings, the phrase in the Qur'ān 2:194, فَإِذَا أَفَضْتُمْ مِنْ عَرَفَاتٍ, has been explained.
they returned from Minè to Mekkeh on the day of the sacrifice—افاضوا مِنَ مِنَى إِلَى مَكِّةَ
إِفَاضَةٌ is the advancing, and pushing on, in journeying or pace and the like, with a multitude, and is only after a state of separation and gathering. It is from the same word as means “pouring out”, or from افاض المَآءَ, “he poured the water out copiously”; the original expression being افاض نَفْسَهُ or رَاحِلَتَهُ, but the object is left out, so the verb resembles an intransitive one.
Or افاضة is the quickly impelling, or urging, of a beast to run with the foot or leg. And افاض: he (a rider) made his camel exert itself beyond measure, to go at a quick run, between the utmost rate and what is less than that; افاضة denotes the half of the full rate of the run of camels carrying riders, and is used only when they have riders on them. (Khálid Ibn-Jembeh.) Every دَفْعَة [or act of pushing on, or pressing on,] is termed إِفَاضَةٌ.
the circuiting around the Kaʿbeh on the return from Minè to Mekkeh on the day of the sacrifice—طَوَافُ الإِفَاضَةِ
4.2.5figurative · مجاز — inferredthey pushed on, or pressed on, in discourse—افاضوا فِى الحَدِيثِ
Synonym اِنْدَفَعُوا: they entered into it; they launched into it; they were large, or copious, or profuse, in it; they dilated in it; or they began, or entered upon, discourse. Also استفاضوهُ according to some, but most, or the skilful, disallow this.
he entered upon an action, or employment, and pushed on in it—افاض فِى عَمَلٍ
Or he began it, or entered upon it.
Lane cites “Bd in x. 62” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
4.2.6he impelled, or thrust, with the thing; he cast, or threw, the thing—افاض بَالشَّيْءِ
4.2.7figurative · مجازthe camel propelled his cud from his inside and ejected it—افاض البَعِيرُ بِجِرَّتِهِ
Or he cast it forth in a scattered and copious state; or it means [he made to be heard] the sound of his cud and of his chewing.
Also افاض alone, and فَاضَ بِجِرَّتِهِ.
4.2.8figurative · مجاز — inferredhe did not make a word, or a sentence, clear, or distinct—مَا افاض بِكَلِمَةٍ
[And ما افاض بكلمة means the same.]
4.2.9figurative · مجازhe shuffled the gaming-arrows, or he played with them—افاض بِالقِدَاحِ
Also عَلَى القِدَاحِ, meaning بِالقِدَاحِ, for prepositions stand in the places of other prepositions.
And افاض القِدَاحَ is the same as ضَرَبَ بِالقِدَاحِ [which has two meanings: he turned about, or shuffled, the gaming-arrows; and he played with the gaming-arrows]; and as أَجَالَهَا [which has the first of these two meanings]; or he dealt them forth.
Aboo-Dhu-eyb says, describing a [wild] he-ass and his she-asses:
shāhidفَكَأَنَّهُنَّ رِبَابَةٌ وَكَأَنَّهُيَسَرٌ يُفِيضُ عَلَى القِدَاحِ وَيَصْدَعُ
[And it was as though they were a bundle of gaming-arrows, and as though he were a shuffler of them, shuffling or] dealing out the arrows, and deciding, and making known what he produced.
Or, according to Kh, and speaking with his loudest voice, saying “The arrow of such a one has won”, or “This is the arrow of such a one”; or, according to some, distributing, or dispensing, by means of the arrows. By عَلَى القِدَاحِ is meant بِالقِدَاحِ; see عَلَى.
One relation of this verse has يَخُوضُ in place of يُفِيضُ.
Az says that إِفَاض [a mistranscription for إِفَاضَةٌ] is always a consequence of a state of separation, or dispersion, and of abundance, or copiousness.
4.2.10figurative · مجاز — inferredthen put it, or throw it, and mix it with your property—ثُمَّ أَفِضْهَا مِنْ مَالِكَ
From a tradition about a thing picked up from the ground; apparently a mistake for فِى مَالِكَ.
4.2.11she (a woman) became wide in the belly—أُفِيضَتْ
As though spread out; or she became large in the belly, and flabby in flesh.
4.3he made the woman's vagina and rectum become one, on the occasion of devirgination—افاض المَرْأَةَ
مَسْلَكَانِ means the vagina and rectum. The same as أَفْضَاهَا, from which this verb appears to be formed by transposition.
